Have 2 Hp 6710f towers, ( I believe an exclusive build,  for sale at Staples) both have AMD Athlon II X4 640 cpus, want to upgrade to Phenom II X6 10xxT Six-CoreThuban core CPU, HP specs say its upgrade for the MB in it now, a N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX (Alvorix) - However, after installing the new cpu in one,  the screen remains blank, No video, there are no audio cluse (Beeps) as in older systems to determine what the possible problem is. Yes, i realize the cpu power consumption is 125w vs., the 80w of the X4 cpu, BUT does that make any difference in just the boot up stage ? I know i will have to replace the power supply, but wanted to make certain the cpu would work with the mb chip set, i was skeptical about hp site listing almost a dozen upgradeable cpus for this mb. Im running windows 7 professional 64 bit os. > do all amd am3 cpus interchange with this mother board ? ANY help would be greatly appreciated, i called hp, Hmmmmmmmmm got bob, or jonathan, or kevin, W/E asked him if the bios or cmos should be flashed with the new cpu installed, [ that was just a wild guess] he said oh yes that is your problem, do that it will work. Again I'm a bit skeptical. Im dumb, please explain what i need to do if i want the upgrade to work properly (besides giving up that is)

Thank you

In this case HP doesn't list incorrect upgrade information. HP notes a maximum CPU wattage of 95 watts based on the motherboard's ability to deliver power to the CPU socket. HP also notes that the motherboard is only compatible with AM3 CPUs. HP also notes that the motherboard is compatible with the AMD Phenom II X6 10xxT Six-Core (Thuban core) series of CPUs. Putting this information together leads to a subset of

AMD Phenom II X6 10xxT CPUs that will work on this motherboard.

Follow Big_Daves advice and get a 95 watt CPU... and it will work.

I'm looking at the spec for your motherboard and it says the max TDP is 95W and that "Only Socket AM3 processors are supported with this motherboard." It sounds like you already had a look at the spec but here's a link just in case:

Sorry if this is not helpful at all, I have no experience with upgrading processors and I don't know what the computer would do to indicate a bad match. It seems very possible, though, that the power consumption being over the limit could cause it to not boot up.

Hi,

Be careful with the list of processors listed under Processor Upgrade Information.  I have seen some posts out here where the AMD II X4 960 did not work.

Stay with the AM3 95 watt processors.  AMD AM3 95 watt processors can be found here.

Thank you for your reply, as you've surmised I did check the specs that HP provided for my mother board ( TY for the quick link) and I've assumed (possibly incorrectly) that the ability of the particular design characteristics of the tower as fabricated by HP is listed as a MAX of 95 watts TDP (Total Design Power) because of the power supplies max output and the power consumption of the additional peripherals built into the unit. This, plus the heat sink cooling fan capacity are two items I was willing to address by replacing them IF the new X6 Phenom CPU would function with the chip set currently contained on the mother board ( as the HP web site spec sheet says it is an upgrade for this mother board). I addressed the insufficient heat sink fan assembly by replacing it with the max cooling assembly as recommended and supplied by AMD.- IF the problem is what you've suggested and the MB electronics are aware of the excessive current draw and therefore will not allow a boot up then HP is erroneously listing the X6 Phenom [AM3 socket] as a "upgrade" for this computer. I may be in a catch 22 situation here, the power supply may be the reason the CPU wont work but i wouldn't know that until i replace that too, prior to installing the cpu.

Thanks, that may very well be the problem and the solution, but i have to ask, why does HP list incorrect upgrade information for their products >??

Hi,

The motherrboard socket is only rated for 95 watt processors and this is restricted by the BIOS and motherboard.  The main power supply has little to do with the socket wattage ratting.
