I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 which I would like to add as a slave drive on my HP p6740f desktop. I have the chassis open, but in order to place the drive -- which took some experimenting -- I needed to disconnect some of the cables. Also, the default connection on this drive is IDE, and there appears to be no IDE connector on this motherboard.  Thus, my questions are two.

First, where can I find a schematic for the p6740f which shows me where the connections on the motherboard properly go, from the SIM card reader, the DVD/CD-ROM reader writer, to and from the in-place hard driver (master), and then the slave driver, the Barracuda?

Second, the Barracuda has another kind of connection possible other than the IDE, although it is not a SATA connection. Does the p6740f support some other kind of connection? What is it? Where do I connect it?

Thanks,

Hello,

Your HP p6740f  mobo

support Sata connection only, if you want to connect IDE hard driver you need to buy pciex1 controller card.

BTW.. the deafult connection on your HP p6740f is sata. How it comes to be IDE?( no IDE data connector on your motherboard)

I found that mobo description before.  The layout is not too specific.  In particular, I wanted to be sure I was reconnecting cables in their proper places.  I needed to disconnect some to get at the power cords, and expected these details to be in the standard manual.  They were not. Also, the SATA connector for the existing hard drive popped out of the mobo slot when I was lifting the hard drive cage out of the chassis. There are a number of SATA connectors on the mobo shown in the diagram.  I also do not know if the SIM card reader connector gets plugged into one of those SATA connectors as well.

What I would like is a diagram like that shown for the I/O ports indicating where things need to be plugged in.  Are all the SATA connections equivalent, for instance?

Also, I was not clear.  The Barracuda is from an old, different system. I have a fine WD which is the primary drive on the system. It has an IDE connector and possibly alongside some other. I understand now that I will need to get a PATA to SATA adapter unit for it.

Hi,

SATA connectors only used to connect hard driver and cd dvd rom driver(data interface only) your memory card reader, usb port and input audio jack all connected to the headers on your motherboard

see the picture I draw to you hope it will clarify things to you

Take a close look on you mobo sata connectors you will find a name with number written behind each one, sata 1,2,3,4

newegg has some pictures for your pc from inside

take a look on it it might help as well

you can connect any 3.5" form factor hard driver to your pc.

if it support a sata you can just buy sata cable and connected to the mobo if not you need to buy pciex1 controller adapter to connect legacy hard driver using IDE interface

Nice job AOG.

You asked about an EIDE to SATA adapter.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186078&cm_re=sata_to_ide-_-12-186-078-_-Pro...

While adding the EIDE drive is feasible, I would suspect an older model EIDE drive (4+ years old) with a smaller cache (8-16mb) would do little for your system.  If you just want it for data back-up, I would suggest this EIDE/SATA to USB adapter: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002&cm_re=sata_to_usb_adapter-_-12-232-0...

This adapter will allow you to temporarily connect "anything", whether a hard drive, or DVD drive.
