Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
I bought more RAM to upgrade my system from 4GB to 8GB. Knowing that different RAMs can be finicky, I was sure to buy an identical stick, same serial number and everything. Well, my Pavilion P6-2142 doesn't like the new RAM, whether paired with the old or by itself, I always get 5 beeps. Any suggestions? Am I missing an important step when installing like waiting 5 minutes while standing on my head? Thanks in advance. I'm not a pro, but I'm not a noobie either, as I've been building systems for years.

5 beeps mean a ram issue.

2 ram sticks cannot have the same serial number.

You must also make sure that the PC supprts more ram and that the new ram has the same latency.

Just the same size and speed wont work if the latency is different.

Thank you for the correction, I didn't mean serial number. The RAM is Hynix HMT351U6CFR8C-H9 and whatever that code is, I made sure to get identical ones. This ram does have the same timings as the old.

Hi,

Hynix dimms have caused compatability issues when installed in some HP PC models in the past.  Check the BIOS level in your PC. Version 7.16 is the latest. If no joy, then review the below suggestions.

Your first consideration should be HP Sales or HP Support when considering memory replacement or upgrades. If you want to consider other manufacturers then the easiest way to avoid memory problems is to contact one of the major memory manufacturers. I am recommending that you try the memory tools from these manufacturers: Corsair, Kingston and Crucial. Once you have determined the dimms that you need, then contact sales or technical support to verify that you have selected the correct dimms. If you buy directly from the manufacturers, then they will stand behind their products.

If you have tried using just the 4 GB dimms in the blue slots without the old dimms installed then they may not be compatible with your PC. Try clearing the CMOS and see if that helps.
