Hello everyone,

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I have a related question.

I have an HP m9040n PC which I started tinkering with and have been trying to get the most out of with plug-and-play parts, just for fun. 🙂

It uses the IPIBL-LA motherboard with the Q6600 processor, and I was about to purchase the Q6700. People seem to be selling them for cheap online, and I thought that even a little upgrade would be better than none.

However, then I came across this processor on Intel's website:

http://ark.intel.com/products/30789/Intel-Core2-Extreme-Processor-QX6850-%288M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-M...

Can anyone confirm if the QX6850 would work? It is the highest of the QX line to use 65 nm, and it is a 775 socket, but that is about as far as my 'expertise' goes.

I have found a couple decent deals on it online, and at 3.00 GHz it would make for a nice upgrade.

Thank you.

while there is obviously no guarantee of compatibility with a later model chip... in my opinion it should work, especially if it is on the same 65nm architecture... however, there is always the possibility that something in the hp bios will not be compatible

hey guys, ive been following this for a while and im just wondering if any of you can help out. obviously im running a IPIBL-LA with a e6750. does anyone no of compatable CPU uprades that they have tried and confurm that they work. ive updated to the lates bios. i have read the asus motherboard spec sheet and the cpus they suggest but its my understanding that an upgrade to these processors wouldnt be that much of an inprovement on my current setup. im really looking for the best possible CPU for the motherboard,

help would be greatly apreciated

I have Force Flashed an IPIBL-LA mobo with a IPIBL-LB Bios. It works swimmingly with a Core 2 Quad Q8200 (45nm, 2.33ghz, 1333fsb) and a Pentium Dual Core E5300 (45nm, 2.6ghz, 800fsb) both of which didn't work before the flash.

I am including a guide on how to do it.

You need a CPU that lets the standard bios boot (65nm), a USB Flash Drive, and all the files I'm going to link too.

1.) Download http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software11/COL34762/pv-86212-1/sp46442.exe

This is the file that contains the IPIBL-LB Bios. Use WinRAR to pull "BEN5.43" out of this archive

2.) Download http://rapidshare.com/files/112382685/SP27608.zip

This is a utility That will allow you to make a bootable USB flashdrive that is good for flashing.

3.) Download http://rapidshare.com/files/112382778/bootme.zip

These are the files required to make a bootable USB drive with the utility above.

4.) Download http://cid-988b91f35a949678.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/AFUDOS229ES.zip

This is an ES Version of AMI Flash. this will alow us to force flash the other bios.

5.) Use the HP utility to create a bootable flash drive. The "bootme.zip" has all the files required to make a bootable flash drive.

6.) Unzip "AFUDOS.EXE" from the archive onto the Flash drive.

7.) Move the "BEN5.43" file to the flash drive.

8.) Take the flash drive and insert it into your IPIBL-LA Motherboard.

9.) Boot the system with the compatable CPU and hit "ESC" to get to the boot list. Select your Flash drive.

10.) Once you get to a command prompt in DOS type "afudos /i"BEN5.43" /pbnc /n" The system will begin flashing the new BIOS. Once complete it should tell you to reboot.

TADA! You now have a 45nm compatable IPIBL-LA MoBo! You're Welcome.

Edit: Spoke a touch too soon, but easy enough to fix. The Network chipset on the two boards is different. So you'll need a PCI network card. 5 dollar NIC, or 100+ dollar replacement mobo. You be the judge.

wow, thanks, ill have to try that. should be a fairly good improvement from what im currently running

sorry to bother people again, if i flash the motherboard to a IPIBL-LB bios, which CPU whould you suggest i purchase?

HP Recommended

Heh, Yeah, upgraded another system from that PDC to said Q8200 and had this board lying around from when I gutted the HP it came in for its CPU (Q6600). Did alittle research, figured the two boards are too similar for it not to work, and frankly, if the board bricks, who really cares. So I tried it. And for the most part it worked. Fancy that.

What CPU do you have now?

i got a e6750, i read that its pretty good for overclocking so im not sure if i should both changing it and instead inverst in some desent fans and see how far i can push it. unless u guys know of any CPU thats worth upgrading  to which is compatable with the motherboard?

HP Recommended

This mod doesn't enable overclocking, just 45nm CPU support. The Q9XX0 series of processors are still quite fast for what they are.
