So I've been having this problem for about two weeks now.  I don't think I've noticed this before and I am not sure what is causing it.

First off let me put in the specs for my computer

I'm running - HP Pavilion HPE h8-1070t CTO Desktop PC with Windows 7 64bit.

I'm having issues with my umb mouse and keyboard.  They work on my laptop without error.  I'm also using a USB wired headset... I'm throwing this in because it might help in trying to figure out whats going on.

The problem happens when I'm running a gaming program.  I can't exactly say when it happens because it seems random, but when it happens, my mouse and keyboard stop working.  The computer runs smoothly and all processes seem to run normally.  I sometimes run firefox as well using pandora, and pandora still runs when this happens... thus nothing is stalling besides my keyboard and mouse.  In addition, my USB headset still responds (although I use a push to talk key from the keyboard, so I can't talk on the headset).

Just some additional information.  When I unplug my keyboard / mouse.  I would typically hear the sound telling my that it was unplugged.  When this bug happens, I don't hear any sounds of that sort when I unplug / plug in my USB devices.  All other sounds are running though (such as pandora, game sounds, etc).

Let me know if you have any solutions.

Thank you

Peter

I've tried a number of the solutions but unfortunately the problem still persists.  I don't know what other additional information would help but at this time this is the most I have.   The computer stopped just a moment ago as well, and I can confirm that although the keyboard and mouse was not working, my USB headset was functional.  This seems like a strange bug and I'm not entirely sure whats causing it.

Just continuing where I left off.  I tried the above options that were posted, as well as removing my USB headset, so now the only thing plugged into my USB sockets are my keyboard and mouse.  I also went from dual screen to single screen.

The problem still persists.  Still not sure what is causing the error, and of course once the keyboard and mouse freeze up, all I'm left to do is restart from the power button.

I thought I'd throw this in, this is a fairly new PC and it's the only problem I've had with it lately.

Just in case you end up seeing this, I'm now having this exact problem (only happens playing Civ V), and wondered if you ended up finding a solution.  Thanks!

Hello lyricmezzo

What operating system are you using and what computer? Is it an HP computer? If the problem only occurs in Civilization V you may want to contact their support. Are you using a USB hub (powered or unpowered), USB 2.0, or USB 3.0?

Hi Travis,

I'm on Windows 7 on a custom built computer.  I found this thread by searching for my problem on Google, and didn't realize that this is an HP specific website.  Also, after that post, I discovered that it isn't actually just Civilization V, but any gaming program that causes the problem.  It was a very similar problem to what OP seemed to have (my USB mouse and keyboard were both unresponsive, but background programs and streams such as Songza worked like normal).  There didn't seem to be a solution given in this thread, but I thought that since it was a few months ago, OP might have since found a solution to his problem.

Thanks,

lyric

It's been a while since I made a repost here.  I have to say that the mouse I used (not sure if I gave the details) was very good but very old (I had it at least since 2001), it never had a problem with normal use, but it started acting up while playing Dungeons and Dragons Online.

So, I cracked and bought a new mouse.  Needless to say I'm problem free now.  Who knows what the problem could have been, except that there is no problem now.

I'll throw this in there too.  Before I found a solution, I noticed that I could put the computer in and out of sleep mode, and my mouse and keyboard would suddenly work again.  While this isn't a solution, it helped me occasionally.

So hopefully thats the problem with you, it's easy to replace a mouse.

Hello lyric

I do have some suggestions that may help. Check your motherboard's download page for any updated BIOS, USB, or motherboard drivers. Another thing I can think of is try a different combination of USB ports. While it may have been a fluke, I once had a motherboard that while all USB ports worked in the back of the motherboard, sometimes one/two would not work correctly if another particular USB had a device. Also if you are using a hub I would suggest plugging the USB directly into the computer.

Glad to hear the issue has been resolved for you kagerou313. Thanks for sharing how you resolved the issue. The older mouse may have had a driver or possibly a hardware problem that caused a conflict with the keyboard, though it would seem odd that it would make the keyboard stop working.

Thank you for the responses!  I was actually surprised to get such quick and thorough responses from such a dead thread. 😄

Anyway, my mouse is very new.  I just custom-built my PC and my mouse is a brand new Xornet from Razer, so I feel like that is probably not it.  When I have an opportunity, I will try to check for updates to my drivers (don't know why I didn't think of that, honestly).  It is also possible that another USB port could be bugging the ones on the back of my PC (when I was experiences the issues most frequently, I was charging a very old .mp3 player on one of the front utility USB ports.  I didn't really think of that, either.  When I get home from work, I'll do a little more troubleshooting and update with my results.

Thanks again for your help.
