Thanks for your advice. I was planning on doing that anyway, just in case.

I purchased upgraded memory for my desktop, from Newegg. It turns out the new memory is 1.6v and the old was 1.5v, so my memory is running at 1066mhz, instead of 1333 mhz. I was told to up the voltage in the BIOS to 1.6v, but the memory is greyed out in the BIOS and I cannot change it. How do I access this?

Hi,

HP uses a locked bios so what you see is what you get.:smileysad:

Typically a faster dimm will match the speed of a slower dimm in the case of mixing dimms with differnent specifications.  Many people try mixing dimms and quickly learn that the PC will no longer boot.

I bought a matched set 16GB, 4x4GB of Corsair RAM. It's rated at 1333mhz at 1.6v. I got it because Newegg said that would work. From what I understand, the motherboard supplies 1.5v, so the RAM can only operate at 1066 mhz. Is there some sort of utility program out there that would let me bump the RAM voltage up to 1.6v?

I've decided I wanted to upgrade the memory in my Pavilion (cheaper than buying a whole new computer, and my current one is still running pretty well).  It's a Pavillion a6213w desktop running Vista. There's already 2 GB installed (2 1 GB sticks), and I have 2 more slots that aren't used. I have already looked up the specs (4 GB max allowed, PC2-5300; 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM).

Do I buy 2  1 GB memory moduels or, what? I want to make sure I'm doing this right (buying the right moduels as I've never upgraded memory before). Thanks!

I have the following memory problem with HPE-580t (bought Nov2010) + Win7 HomePrem all directly from HP.

The specs say it allows  up to 24Gb of RAM. So I decided to upgrade from 8Gb to 20Gb.

Adding to HP default RAM (Elpida 2Gb 2r*8 PC3-10600U-10-B0)  high quality RAM from  G.SKILL (G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500)).

I've tried several configurations:

6 DIMMs: 4*4*2*2*2*2 = 16 - after several attempts the system starts to see all 16Gb - good

but if I put

6 DIMMs: 4*4*4*4*2*2 = 20 - windows says "20GB (16 GB usable)" - so I have only 16 instead of 20 - bad

Why only 16 GB out of 20Gb can be used?  What should be done in order to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Can I mix different module sizes, for example 2x4GB in slots 1 and 3 and 2x2GB in slots 2 and 4 (total 12GB) in a HPE-310PT PC?

Thanks

Hi Murfury,

Windows 7 Home Premium limits memory usage to 16 MB.  Review this article

You need to upgrade Windows Home Premium to either Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate.

Ifbb73,

Some motherboards are particular about where the largest dimms should be placed.  I would populate the 4 GB dimm in first slot of each channel.

These two articles may be helpul but they do reference Intel motherboards.

This article describes Intel memory dimm layouts for dual channel configurations.

This is an Intel dimm layout document for single, dual, triple and flex mode memory configurations.

Hello,

I've read just about all the replys on this thread , and they have been very informative and helpful. I'm gonna upgrade the memory  in my presario SR2032X. It will be very easy as long as the right modules go into place. My question is about the speed of the new modules.  The pc specs say it will support PC2-4200, but the mobo specs say it can support either PC2-4200 or PC5300 the PC5300 runs at 667MHz and the PC2-4200 runs at 533MHz. I would like the faster speed of course, but don't want to cause any problems. There are 2 slots on the mobo for memory, and right now I have 2 - 256MB/DDR2PC2-4200. I'm looking to replace them with 2 - 1GB/DDR2 PC5300. Do you think this will be ok?
