Hmmm... I wonder about trying this without any of the removing of the cover hassle.
I wonder if you could get away with just apoxying or liquidnailing a mount to the back would work...
Your solution looks nice, but it's a little too DIY for my comfort level. Thanks!

You're more likely to get killed crossing the street! Live LIFE, and take the PLUNGE; you'll be glad you did once it's all done.
I could make a youtube vid showing how to take the back cover off if you need help. Just let me KNOW, as I have to pull the 20" cover (2011x) off again as one of my NUTS is some how MIA when I went to screw a bolt into one fo the 4 mounting holes. It's holding strong at 3 as I type this, but I like things RIGHT.
I think HP was trying to save a buck when they excluded mounts during manufacturing.

Nice job with the mount! I have all the tools to do this but hadn't planned on DIY project just to mount a monitor.
I just bought two HP 2311x monitors and had planned on connecting them to a quad monitor stand I have. Surprise, no VESA mounting! I also contacted HP to see if they had any plans to offer a mounting kit and both main site support reps and parts store reps had no information. One rep asked if I had tried Googling it - that's good stuff!
I thought about returning these for a comparable Samsung monitor but the Samsung did not have a VESA mount either... Frustrating.
HP! Come on already, get a kit out there! Thousands of these were sold over Black Friday weekend and no doubt a LOT of people are looking for a VESA mounting kit.

For anyone interested including 720x_net, I have redesigned the vesa mount project for the 2711x monitor.
Ive mounted a couple of thin metal brackets I got from Home Depot for $2 to the inside of the monitor back cover, drilled the proper holes and through bolted the vesa mounting plate right to the back cover. as you can see, this is a much less complicated design as 720x`s and quite a bit easier as well as attractive. Attatched pictures should be helpful as a guide to anyone who wishes to replicate this..

Great, and much needed project. My monitors arrived today, so i am very interested in doing this. One question, various posts talk on the boards talk about how hard it can be to remove the back cover. Is it really that hard? If so, how did you do it?

Here is someone who makes a bracket that won't void the warranty: http://www.gladiatorjoe.com/ADAPTER-BRACKETS-to-convert-HP-Monitors_c7.htm
I bought two.
