I'm trying to add a second monitor but it is not getting a signal.

Using HP Paviion Elite HPE 210f running Win 7 64 bit. This has an ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics card. I've been using a single monitor on the dvi port for a long time with no problems.  Now I want to add a second monitor. The VGA port had a plastic cap screwed over it. I removed the cap and plugged in the monitor. It does not get any signal from the computer. I tried updating the graphics driver which caused a blue screen. Rebooted. Primary monitor still ok but nothing on the 2nd monitor.

Tried running the Catalyst Control Center. In the Graphics Hardware tab for Primary Adapter it shows the Graphics Chipset is ATI Radeon HD and all other info says "Not Available."  In the Graphics Software tab it shows

2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1186

2D Driver File path  Not available

Direct 3D Version  7.14.10.0860

Open GL Version  not available

Catalyst Control Center Version  2009.1201.2247.40849

Do I need to do something to enable the VGA port?  Does this video card support dual ports/monitors?  I tried looking on the AMD site but could not find anything specific about this.

By the way, the primary monitor has a VGA cord, plugged into an adapter to fit in the DVI port.  Not sure if that makes a difference.

Here are the specs of your HPE-210f computer. Please note that the DVI and VGA ports that are next to the rear USB ports are "blocked" for a reason. These video ports are blocked because the Integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics on the motherboard are disabled when an add-in graphics card, such as the ATI Radeon HD 5450 included with your system, is installed. The only two ports you can use are the DVI and HDMI in one of the expansion slots above the rear I/O shield. Please note that the DVI port can output digital (natively) or analog (using a DVI-to-VGA adapter) and the HDMI port can only output digital signals. In any case, one or both monitors will need to support digital signals.

Hi,

That card should support dual monitors one for HD and one for SD as mentioned in this: Probably by some reasons, HP blocks the VGA port physically and you can only use DVI or HDMI, you can't use both.

Regards.

Well, I have just made both the integrated and discrete graphics work (although I'm sure the company would not approve, yatah, yatah,...) and it was extremely simple. ( I will add, that this isn't necessarily for the average user, but it's certainly not so advaced you need command line or anything. Use at your own risk.)

First, I popped the covers off the ports for the VGA and DVI on the motherboard. Then I shutdown and booted to "setup" (F10 during boot up for my machine, but it may vary) to access the BIOS settings. Under the "Advanced" tab there was an option for primary video card. Pressing "enter" provided options for selecting either the "Onboard" or "PCI" graphics cards as the primary video  card. I selected "Onboard" then saved and exited, which let the system boot up.

At this point, my monitor predicatably went blank, as I had just altered which video card was supplying the visuals. While it was booting up, I climbed behind the desk and moved my monitor's VGA cable from the 5450's DVI port (with adapter) to the 4200's VGA. The display came up on the my 1600:900 monitor as some kind of tiny resolution and the display selection (under "adjust screen resolution" in the control panel) called it a "(Default Monitor)" instead of identifying the display. I then let Windows Update download new drivers for the 4200 integrated motherboard card and rebooted. Upon reboot, the drivers were in place and the resolution was correctly adjusted.

Next I tried out putting in a second display by pluggin in a projector to the VGA to DVI adapter and into the Discrete 5450's DVI port, which worked great. The display settings in the control panel seem to handle it just fine, too, so I think I've got everything under control and working how I want it.

Future speculation/plans:

I think now that the drivers have installed for the onboard card, it may not matter which one is set as the primary video card in the BIOS. I first want to see if I can run both monitor and projector again, but in swithched ports. Then I want to see if I can run just the monitor from the 5450 card with the projector off. If that all goes well, I'll try switching the BIOS settings and see if I can still use the 4200 integrated graphics port for the projector. (It's an old Epson 800:600 projector, so I wanna use the "lesser" graphics card for that one.) I'll update this if anything goes wrong with this.

HI, I have an old HP with the screen light gone - so I use a monitor as my screen.  I am running Vista and the monitor is a BENQ FP937s - all works very well while I complete work on this laptop and transfer all to my new laptop.  I fiddled with the settings and now the monitor will not work at all - it is powered, and says Out of Range!  This means the signal resolution is wrong - I have juggled the various screen resolutions but the second I plug int he monitor cable to the laptop, the laptop loses visibility) I can JUST make out what it is doing!  And then I cannot alter any settings to the monitor - which still says Out of Range!

Any ideas and help please? you can reply to me on lintinlol@hotmail.com

Many thanks!
