After 2-3 calls with tech support, they decided to send me a new printer–thank goodness it was still under warranty! Everyone was super friendly, but the whole thing was still really frustrating. Anyway, the new one seems to be working fine.

I am on Mac OS 10.6.8 and was having the same issue many of you have described in the attached. I was able to get support through the chat line, and after about an hour and a half, the issue has been resolved (at least for now). The fix is actually pretty straight forward.
1) Go to your pring & fax preferences and delete the printer from your list.
2) You may want to also run the HP Uninstall application to ensure complete removal of the old driver. In my case, removing it from the preferences pane took care of it.
3) Ensure the printer is connected directly to your computer. In my case, I was accessing it as a shared printer on another Mac here on my local network. For setup, I connected the printer directly to my system via USB.
4) Download the latest installer and driver to your desktop. For the P1006, I was given the following URL.
5) Run the installer and follow the prompts.
Voila- in my case the problem went away. [I had to do this on both the hosting computer as well as the system I am using, but this resolved the issue.
Good Luck.

I recently downloaded both the Leopard App to my mac computer and an updated OpenOffice programme since when I am unable to print properly as I do not get a choice of option such as current page or page numbers etc., and if I use the downward arrow after the printer name, I get a choice of page number but always the "media tray empty" message when I want to print. I have no idea what the media tray is... Why is all this happening as I need to use my printer freely with usual options as I did before upgrading the system. Magpie2

Hello
I understand the printer is giving a false error of "media tray empty".
This message means it doesn't sense the paper in the paper tray.
Make sure there are no jobs in the print queu. If a job is stuck in the queu with this message it wont continue to print until it is cleared out. (try solution two and three.)

Turn the printer off and on again.
You can do a hardware test on the printer. Open and close the top lid 5 times quickly and it will print out a page with black lines on it.
Make sure the usb is connected directly to the mac and not a hub or router and no longer then 6 feet.
Try and print a document.
If you need more assistance just let me know.

I had this problem with my HP 4580, also with Mac (OS 10.6.8).
I tried everything. Finally, this is what helped:
From
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00786157
HP Deskjet F4580 and F4583 All-in-One Printers - Blinking Lights
Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
On the control panel, press and hold the Paper Type button and Resize to Fit button at the same time.
Figure 33: Press these buttons to print a self-test report
Release both buttons at the same time. The product prints a self-test report.
If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

I too get this message and this is what I did....embarrassing ending....
The paper tray is full and I have restarted my Mac and turned the printer on and off.
I tried what others suggested with compressed air and although it seemed to be working it really wasn't.
It does print test pages without issue and so I knew there must be something that I am not doing that is preventing my printer from printing.
Light bulb moment - On my printer diaglog pop up screen I had checked "two sided" printing to print double sided earlier this week and when I went to print again I noticed that it was still checked.
I unchecked that and now my printer works fine!
Yes I do have to lift the lid to get it to print the back side when two sided printing. No dialog box just the flashing pink ink on the control panel.
