Hii there
I have a HP Presario C742TU laptop
PN= KG554PA
It has 120gb hard drive.
I've been searching all day trying to work out if I can upgrade the hard drive and if I can which one to buy.

I want 250gb (or 320gb if it will work) and basically I'd like the link to buy a compatable one online. I've been searching for them but once I find one that seems good, I'm not sure whether it will work. I don't want to spend money on it (plus shipping to NZ) and have it not work.

Thanks so much!

You can install and use up to a 500 GB SATA notebook hard drive without issues. You can also use hybrid and SSD drives if you feel a need for speedy access times.

Compaq 6715b

Windows  Vista SP 1 (Unable to install SP2 unless I reformat the whole laptop which I have no intention to)

Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00GHz (now you can see why I want to upgrade my CPU)

System type: 32-bit OS

As you can see, my processor is an AMD Turion. I've ask for help in this forum earlier (here's the link:  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/Compaq-6715b-CPU-upgrade/td-p/560985 )

I want to ask this question, think I screwed it up already but heck!

Is it true that if your laptop has an AMD processor, it can only upgrade to another AMD processor? Cuz, according to my local IT shop, I need an AMD processor but I got a Intel processor.

Thanks.

That is an absolute fact. AMD for AMD swap only. The sockets are totally different. Maybe they will accept the unused return.

Thanks.

Erico,

As I'm understanding the opinion and decision is not changed.

Could you please make suggestion which processor I can buy for replacement?

Many thanks in advance.

I just wanted to post back and update on my ram upgrade. I asked a question regarding my G62-340US a few months back.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/Notebook-Laptop-Upgrade-FAQ/m-p/522043#M41017

AMD Athlon II Dual Core Processor for Notebook PC P340 (2.2ghz 1mb L2 cache)

3072mb DDR3 SDRAM (2 DIMM)

320 gb hard drive

AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 shared graphics

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I added a Crucial 4gb 1066 ram stick and removed the micron 1gb. (I think Micron is actually made by Crucial?)

Success! I now have a 2gb A-data and 4gb Crucial running perfectly for a total of 6gb ram. I know it's best to use matching sets of ram but I was on a budget and I got the 4gb ram stick for only $34.99 at Newegg.com.

Many people here have recommended Crucial brand ram and I couldn't agree more. They have a compatibility checker on their website so you can see if it will work in your notebook.

I'm happy the new ram works, but I must admit there is not much difference in performance. The upgrade helps with graphics memory and I noticed that pdf files open much faster, but for everyday use the original 3gb of ram that came in the computer was just fine. It was still a nice upgrade for only $35.

Excellent! I am always glad to hear about a successful upgrade.

About Micron...Micron actually makes the chips that many memory module makers (Crucial and Corsair included) use in their modules.

Hi,

I have a dv-6650er notebook. It has Turion 64 X2 TL-60 (tailor) inside. So I'd like to install TL-68 (tyler), but it doesn't starts (cooller is running, but no video signal). So my question is: can I do something with it? How can I make it work?

Thanks, Andrew.

Andrew,

The Turion TL-68 will not work as it has no BIOS support.

For your notebook series the following processors are upgrades that do have BIOS support.

Turion MK-38 (2.2 GHz, 512MB L2 cache)

Turion TL-66 (2.3 -GHz, 1-MB L2 cache)

Turion TL-60 (2.0 -GHz, 1-MB L2 cache)

Turion TL-58 (1.9 -GHz, 1-MB L2 cache)

Turion TL-56 (1.8 -GHz, 1-MB L2 cache)

Athlon™ TK-53 (1.7-GHz. 512-MB L2 cache)

Any other processor is a no-go. The $$ risk of installing an unsupported processor belongs to the owner of the notebook. 😞
