I had the same problem.
I have an HP G62-347NR laptop.
I updated the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller.
I replaced the AMD SATA contoller with the Standard AHCI 1.0 serial ATA controller.
It has not hungup since making the change.
I have not noticed any change in the performance either.

Hi,
I have a HP G62 as well and now for approx. 8 months of back and forth trying all kinds of different things with no success I finally came across this post. Replacing the amdsata driver with standard Microsoft AHCI driver has done the trick. I have now been running with this for 2.5 days and no freezing up.
Performance has no impact, actually it's 10 times faster due to no more freezing up as my laptop use to take anywhere from 30-60 seconds per freezup(HD light on all the time) before the PC finally responded to allow me to continue my work. It also seem to come in spurts as sometimes the issue would simply re-occur for hrs and then disappear for the rest of the day. I would then reboot and the problem would re-appear!!!
Any how thank you so much as it's been solid for 2.5 days with additional MS updates occurring and ITUNES software updates which all requirement multiple reboots and the problem has not re-appeared!!! So problem has been resolved(with a big sigh of relief) on my HP G62 just as others have indicated as well.
All the best
Wayne

Hi,
Please also ensure the power management for your HP G62 is setup to Maximum setting as I had to do both(replacement of amdsata with Microsoft's standard driver) as well as this power management setting to make this work properly.

Wayne

I'm using Ubuntu Linux and the problem seems to be solved thanks to Micro**bleep** users. In Linux open the terminal and edit the file /etc/initramfs-tools/modules as super user:
sudo gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
when the file opens add ahci to the opened file, the file after the operation should look like this:
# List of modules that you want to include in your initramfs.
# They will be loaded at boot time in the order below.
#
# Syntax: module_name [args ...]
#
# You must run update-initramfs(8) to effect this change.
#
# Examples:
#
# raid1
# sd_mod
ahci
Save the changes and update initramfs:
sudo update-initramfs -k all -u
restart the system
The system seems ok so far....i will let you know in the next days....
However....Hp sucks....Sorry Hp.

Thank you!!
I had a problem with cdrom in my HP ProBook 450 G2 and Windows 8.1. When I inserted disk into cdrom it started reading but after w while it went to sleep. I wasn't able to eject the cd (from Windows or by button). When I tried to shutdown windows os it hanged for a few minutes, then cdrom started working again for a while and finally turned off.
I guess there must be something wrong with "Intel 9 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller" driver.
