For the past couple of weeks, my HP laptop 15 has not been fully charging. I ran HP Support Assistant and it says the battery is normal, but the AC adapter is not attached. The red light where I inserted the adapter is flashing orange/red and there is a "squeaky" noise coming from that spot. Sometimes it will charge fully and sometimes just a little bit and quit. Then I tried restarting my laptop, press ESC key, F2, and run diagnostics and it says both are running normal. But, there is something not working or it would not stop charging and making that "squeaky" sound. I have also tried plugging in adapter in several outlets around the house. I don't know whether to buy a new 45W adapter or a new battery or could it be something else completely wrong. Or, maybe it would be worth it just to invest in a new laptop (although I have only had this one since July 2023). Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @justlilme,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a potentially tricky issue. The flashing orange/red light and the "squeaky" sound near the AC adapter port suggest that there could be a problem with either the power connection or the internal charging circuit of the laptop.
Here are a few possibilities to consider.
AC Adapter Issue:
- Even though HP Support Assistant indicates that the AC adapter is normal, it might not be delivering consistent power. Sometimes, a faulty adapter can cause intermittent charging or unusual behavior like the noise you're hearing.
- You could try testing your laptop with a different 45W or compatible adapter if you have one available (or borrow one from a friend) to see if that resolves the issue.
Battery Issue:
- A battery that isn't charging properly or has a damaged cell can also cause these charging inconsistencies. Even if the battery shows as "normal" in diagnostics, it might still have an underlying issue affecting its ability to hold or receive charge correctly.
- You could try running a full battery test or calibration in HP Support Assistant to check its performance more closely.
Charging Port or Motherboard Issue:
- The "squeaky" sound could indicate a loose or damaged charging port or internal connection, possibly near the motherboard.
Driver or BIOS Issue:
- Sometimes, a driver or BIOS update can cause charging problems. Make sure your BIOS and all power-related drivers (such as ACPI or battery drivers) are up to date.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
