Hello 🙂

I have an EliteBook 8740W mobile workstation, and it's been great until a recent software update.

I'm not sure exactly when it started because I don't use the SD card reader constantly, but after a recent HP Support Assistant update the SD card reader has an issue: No matter what kind of card I put in there, it thinks it's an xD Picture Card.

I have several different SD cards, and have tried them all. They work fine on other devices; but when I put them into the card reader on the EliteBook, same thing: Xd Picture Card. If I click on it to open it Windows says "Please insert an xD Picture Card"

The device manager shows the card reader as supporting all three types:

But if I disable the xD-Picture Card device, it simply won't recognize any card inserted at all.

So basically, the SD "detection", for lack of a better term, is broken and it thinks SD cards are xD cards.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for the entire card reader and it still does the same thing.

Thanks!

Right click on each of those Ricoh entries in device manager and select Uninstall.

When done

Right click on any hardware device in DM and select "scan for hardware changes" Windows will reinstall the hardware and drivers, see if this helps, if not I think the reader may have malfunctioned.

Use a bright flashlight and be sure nothing got in the card slot that shouldn't be there.

Okay, I did that.

Now, after hardware scan/driver install, the only device listed is Ricoh xD-PIcture Card Controller.

The SD and MMC portions are simply not found by the scan.

Sigh.

And also, there's nothing physically in there. Guess it's time for warranty. Blargh.

Thanks.

I was able to fix mine with SP46999.  I got it from a third party download site.  It cleared both of the missing drivers from my device manager.
