Common problems for Battery

I have an Aero 13 Ryzen 5 5600u 16GB 512GB dual boot (Win10, Ubuntu22.04).

Its 3+ yrs old so battery is around 60-70% only. Last week I had an urgent travel and left it home. Battery got depleted fully and wont' charge backup.

Second issue is it wont' boot into anything. This I believe is related to battery issue

I can't boot into desktop or console in any of the OS. PC resets after selecting OS from bootmenu and initial boot messages.

On windows I can get recovery console. On Ubuntu it resets after the messages. Even live distros (with and without secureboot) don't boot past the initial messages.

Hi @wedniaa2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issues you're describing with your HP Aero 13 seem to stem from a combination of a degraded battery and potential system configuration or hardware problems caused by the complete battery depletion. Here's how to approach this.

Address the Battery Issue

Force Reset the Laptop:

  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Plug the charger back in and try powering it on.

Check the Charging Circuit:

  • Ensure the charger and power port are working. If possible, test with a known working HP charger.
  • Inspect the charging port for damage or debris.

BIOS Battery:

  • A completely depleted battery might have impacted the CMOS battery, which could cause boot issues.
  • If comfortable, access the laptop's internals to check or replace the CMOS battery.

Try Booting Without the Main Battery:

  • If the battery is removable, disconnect it and run the laptop directly on AC power to rule out a failing battery causing boot issues.

Troubleshoot Boot Issues

Since the system resets after selecting the OS, and even live distros fail, the issue might involve the firmware or corrupted boot settings.

a. Update BIOS (If Possible):

  • Create a BIOS Recovery USB:
    • On a different computer, visit the HP support website and download the BIOS update for your laptop model.
    • Follow instructions to create a recovery USB drive.
  • Perform BIOS Recovery:
    • Insert the USB into your laptop.
    • Power it on while pressing the key combination for BIOS recovery (usually Win + B or Ctrl + Esc).

b. Reset BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Enter the BIOS setup (usually F10 during boot).
  • Load default BIOS settings.
  • Disable Secure Boot temporarily if you're using dual boot.

Troubleshoot Bootloaders and OS

a. Windows Recovery Console:

  1. Use the recovery tools to repair boot files:
    • Select Startup Repair in the recovery console.
    • If unsuccessful, use Command Prompt and run:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

  1. Check for disk errors:

chkdsk C: /f /r

b. Ubuntu Boot Repair:

  1. Create a Boot Repair USB on another device.
  2. Boot into it and let it attempt to repair the GRUB bootloader.

c. Test with Live USB:

  • Boot a minimal live Linux distro (e.g., TinyCore or Puppy Linux) to test for hardware faults.

Verify Hardware Integrity

Run HP Diagnostics:

  • Power on while pressing Esc to access the HP System Diagnostics.
  • Perform extensive hardware tests on the storage, RAM, and motherboard.

Inspect SSD Health:

  • If you can boot into any environment, use tools like CrystalDiskInfo (Windows) or smartctl (Linux) to check the SSD's SMART data.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
