HP Pavilion Notebook - 17t-g100 CTO (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

What is the memory capability of the HP Pavilion 17t-g100 CTO? Product number L8W07AV. Board ID 80A2 Intel i3-6100 CPU @ 2.30GHz

I have found online that it has 2 slots and takes PC3L 12800 1600 Mhz Shared memory.

I see:

16GB kit (2x8GB) DDR3L 1600MHz(1333MHz)PC3-12800 (PC3-10600)CL11 1.35V/1.5V  2Rx8 SODIMM 204 PIN unbuffered non ECC High Performance Notebook Laptop Memory Upgrade

I want to know what the max the system will accept (16?) and the best performing type it will accept?

Will it accept DDR4?

Thanks

Lonnie

Hi, Lonnie:

The max memory your notebook can support is 2 x 8 GB of DDR3L-1600.

If your notebook is one of those that has 6 GB of memory, you may want to max out the memory with one of these kits:

Crucial RAM 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz CL11 Laptop Memory CT2KIT102464BF160B at Amazon.com

DDR4 memory won't work in your PC because it runs at a lower voltage than DDR3L, and the notch in the memory board is cut in a different place than it is on a DDR3L memory chip, making it physically impossible for a DDR4 memory chip to fit in a DDR3 memory slot.

Hello Paul, I took your recommendation and installed the Ram 16 MB upgrade. I only had 4 MB previously, as that is what it came with new from Best Buy out of the box. The speed is tremendously better! Thanks again for your help with the Bios and the Ram upgrade.

Do you have a recommendation for upgrading the hard drive?

I currently have a Model WDC WD10JPVX-60JC3T0 1TB 5.4k RPM SATA 9.5mm 2.5" HD

Between the 4 megs and the HD I could go take a nap while a page was loading.

I updated the Bios, Refreshed Windows and upgraded the RAM and I am much better off. maybe a HDD would help as well?

preferably plug and play.

Thanks again!

You're very welcome, Lonnie.

I would definitely upgrade to a 2.5" SSD.

If you think your notebook is running good now, wait until after you install a SSD.

This is the 1 TB model I recommend:

Amazon.com: Western Digital 1TB WD Blue SA510 SATA Internal Solid State Drive SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s,...

If you are ever interested in installing W11, see the info below that I give to folks that want to do that.

I have W11 installed on all of my old PCs that are officially not supported for W11.

If you are happy with your PC, if you are interested in installing W11 24H2 on your PC as is, watch this video, which is the easiest way to do it in my opinion, and I have tried many different ways to do this during the last 3 years.

How to install Windows 11 24H2 on Unsupported PC (Early Access) 2024 (youtube.com)

Download the W24H2 ISO file and use that (3rd option).

Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com)

You can download the free 7-Zip file utility from the link below.  The top line is for 64 bit.

7-Zip

You'll have to repeat this procedure each October when Microsoft rolls out the new builds because a PC that does not meet Microsoft's minimum W11 hardware requirements will never automatically get the update to the next build.

Other than that, your PC will continue to get the monthly cumulative and other updates.

That's only a minor inconvenience to have continued OS support beyond October of 2025.

And best of all, it can be done at absolutely no cost.

You can easily go back to W10 within 10 days of installing W11 as long as you don't delete the upgrade files or the Windows.old folder.

Hey Paul, thanks for the recommendations.

I was thinking about going with a 2TB drive. What do you think about the Samsung 870 EVO SATA 2.5” SSD 2TB   MZ-77E2T0 /MZ-77E2T0B/AM   $152.99

vs.

WD 2TB WD Blue SA510 SATA Internal Solid State Drive SSD -SATA III 6Gb/s, 2.5”/7mm, Up to 560 MB/s- WWS200T3B0A   $126.99

Also, I watched the first youtube video you shared for the win 11 upgrade by TIPS 2 FIX. You say that one first is your preferred method? Going into the command prompt? Also are the versions listed in the Windows Insider dropdown list the current up to date official versions?

Thanks

You're very welcome, Lonnie.

The Samsung drive has a slightly better write speed, but I have read posts from other forum members that they don't always work in HP PC's, and I have no idea why that would be.

I have not heard anything about WD drives not working.

I have WD 2.5" SSDs in a couple of my HP desktop PC's and they work fine.

The W11 upgrade...disregard the part of the video where he explains how to get the insider preview file.

I gave you the link to the final release version of 22H4 from the Microsoft site.

That's the one you should use and then use the command prompt entries on that ISO file after you use 7-Zip on it to upgrade to W11.

I don't have a lot of files on my PC's so the upgrade process took less than 15 - 20 minutes.

I think the PC with the most files and programs on it had around 400 GB of space taken up.

Paul, again I am going to go with your advice again and get the SA510 2TB WD. After I install the HD I will try the upgrade to Windows 11 with your recommendations.  I will install a new battery on the motherboard while I have it open too. I will let you know how it turns out when I am done.

You advice has been priceless.
