Hi @Cyr-Bellan1_122,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The noise and the "cooling fan" message you are experiencing on your HP Pavilion 15 PC when it's plugged into the mains may indicate a hardware issue or a performance-related setting. Here's a breakdown of potential reasons and solutions.

Increased Performance Mode:

  • When plugged in, the laptop might switch to a high-performance mode, causing the processor and GPU to generate more heat. This prompts the fan to spin faster to cool the system, resulting in the noise you're hearing.

Cooling System Issue:

  • The "cooling fan" message suggests that the cooling fan might not be operating as intended. Dust accumulation, worn-out bearings, or a failing fan could cause excessive noise.

Power Supply Problem:

  • If your power adapter is malfunctioning or delivering inconsistent power, it can cause overheating, making the fan work harder to compensate.

Thermal Paste Degradation:

  • If the thermal paste on the processor or GPU has degraded, it can lead to poor heat dissipation, resulting in the fan running excessively to cool the system.

Driver or BIOS Issue:

  • Outdated BIOS or fan control settings might contribute to inefficient fan operation.

Solutions:

Clean the Cooling System:

  • Use compressed air to blow out any dust from the vents and fan. Ensure the laptop is powered off and disconnected from the mains while doing this.

Inspect the Cooling Fan:

  • If the fan continues to make excessive noise.

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and adjust the settings for "Plugged in" mode. You can set the fan to a quieter mode by selecting "Balanced" or "Power Saver" instead of "High Performance."

Update BIOS and Drivers:

  • Ensure your BIOS and drivers are up to date. You can download the latest updates from HP's official support page for your model.

Test with a Different Power Adapter:

  • Try charging the laptop with another compatible HP power adapter to rule out issues with the current adapter.

Check for Overheating:

  • Use monitoring software (e.g., HWMonitor) to check CPU and GPU temperatures. If temperatures are consistently high, the thermal paste might need reapplication.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter the diagnostics menu. Run the "Fan Test" to determine if the cooling fan is faulty.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
