HP Spectre x360 - 13-4007na (ENERGY STAR)

Hello.  Is there an up to date driver for the Intel Management Engine please (IMEI).  I have a warning triangle next to it in device manager, but the only driver on the drivers page for this laptop is the original Windows 8.1 driver from 2015.  I just wondered if there was a later driver available, or, alternatively, whether I can just ignore it.  On my other laptop (HP Pavilion) Windows update installed the driver automatically, so I assume there's a reason it didn't on this laptop.  Is it one that had vulnerabilities?

The driver I gave you is from the HP Elitebook 850 G4 business class notebook that comes with an Intel 7th generation Core processor.

Hi:

There is this W10 one from 2017 for notebooks with the Broadwell processors:

11.6.0.1045

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp79001-79500/sp79059.exe

Thanks.  Is that ok to use then?

You're very welcome.

Yes, the file is good for W10 and W8.1 as well.

Thank you.  The main concern is about vulnerabilities regarding the Intel MEI.  There don't seem to be any firmware updates for it either on the driver page for this model.  Do you know if there have been any firmware updates?  Also how old is the Windows 10 driver please?  Windows update left the system without a driver for IMEI but it had downloaded it as an "optional driver" - which suggests to me that Windows didn't think it was necessary.

I have the latest bios installed which is from 2020.

You're very welcome.

That is the latest driver I could find for the Broadwell processors.

I gave you the date yesterday...2017.

Any IMEI firmware updates would be delivered by a BIOS update.

If you post the hardware ID for the Intel Management Engine Interface device, I will see if there is a newer driver from a newer model notebook that would also have support for your notebook's IMEI version.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device:

Thank you.  Yes you did say it was 2017, sorry.  The hardware ID is PCI\VE_8086&DEV_9CBA&SUBSYS_802D103C&REV_03

The driver currently installed (provided by Windows update) is 11.0.0.1146 from 12.6.2015

I had scanned with Intel CSME Tool which says "This system may be vulnerable" - that was after the latest bios update.  Thank you for your assistance.

I don't normally use driver websites, being cautious, but this site seems to think there is a 2024 driver. What do you think?

You're very welcome.

I found this HP driver from 2023 that shows driver support for the hardware ID you posted:

2313.4.16.0

sp147819.exe

Fix and enhancements:

- Addresses security vulnerabilities CVE-2022-29871 and CVE-2022-36392.

Here is a partial copy and paste of the driver setup information file which shows driver support for the hardware ID you posted.

But here is how Intel drivers work...

While it may be a newer driver, I don't know what driver version you will actually end up with.

The file will install the latest version of the driver for your notebook's specific IMEI hardware version, which according to the driver is 10.x

So, the only suggestion I can offer would be to try the HP driver I posted and then check the driver version and date of the actual driver that the driver package installed.

Thank you - I'll try that one and report back!  It's an HP one which sounds better than the 2024 one I linked from the driver website (which I'm always cautious about).  I think I mentioned that I found the original 2015 driver in "Optional Updates" from Windows Update.  There are quite a few other things in Optional Updates as well and I wondered if you knew what they were for?  I thought one might be some firmware?  But I can't see any of those items in the list of drivers/updates for this model on the HP driver site.

Intel System 10/3/2016 10.1.1.38

Intel (R) Corporation - MEDIA - 11/10/2015 8.4.2.120

REALTEK - MEDIA - 9/30/2015 6.4.10041.130

Realtek Semiconductor Corp MTD 10/22/2015 10.0.10240.21283

It's a little confusing all the Realtek ones, as the only realtek device on this laptop is the card reader and I already have the driver for that.  The sound and video drivers are Intel SST .   It does say only install these if you're having problems and the laptop is running fine so I'm cautious about that too.

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

I don't know what those optional updates are for, but I recommend you install them.

They are driver updates for various components.

Google the driver information and you may be able to find out what they do.

For example, the first one is an update for the SMBus controller driver which is installed by the Intel chipset installation utility.

INTEL - System - 10/3/2016 12:00:00 AM - 10.1.1.38 - Microsoft Community

The REALTEK - MEDIA seems to be an update to the audio driver.
