Hi @HM0210,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the FN key on your HP keyboard is disabled and you're unable to type letters, it could be due to several reasons, including a stuck key, an incorrect keyboard setting, or a hardware issue. Here’s a step-by-step guide to fix it.

Check for a Stuck Key

  • Ensure none of the keys (especially FN, Shift, Ctrl, or Caps Lock) are physically stuck. A stuck key can interfere with typing.

Try Pressing FN + Esc

  • On some HP keyboards, pressing FN + Esc toggles the function key behavior. This might re-enable normal key operation.

Restart Your Computer

  • Restarting can often resolve temporary glitches with the keyboard.

Turn Off Filter Keys

  • Filter Keys can cause the keyboard to behave strangely. Here's how to disable it:
    1. Press Windows + U to open Ease of Access settings.
    2. Click on Keyboard.
    3. Turn Filter Keys off.

Test with an External Keyboard

  • Connect an external keyboard to see if the issue is with your keyboard or system settings.

Update Keyboard Drivers

  • Outdated or corrupted drivers might cause keyboard problems. Here's how to update:
    1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Keyboards.
    3. Right-click your keyboard and choose Update Driver.
    4. Follow the prompts to update.

Reset BIOS Settings

  • If the FN key behavior is controlled by BIOS, resetting it might help:
    1. Restart your computer and press F10 (or the correct key for your HP model) to enter BIOS.
    2. Look for an option related to "Action Keys" or "Function Key Behavior."
    3. Set it to your preference (e.g., Standard or Multimedia).
    4. Save changes and exit.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
