HP Compaq 2230s

So basically my compaq 2230s stopped charging all of a sudden and I ruled out the charger because I tried a new one and it didn't work. Trying to move the charger around the port didn't help so I guess it's a motherboard issue. Can someone tell me if I can fix it myself?

Hi @Alwcs,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’ve done a good job narrowing down the issue to the laptop itself. If moving the charger around the port doesn’t help, it’s likely the charging port (DC jack) or motherboard circuitry is causing the problem. Here's how you can assess and potentially fix the issue.

Inspect the Charging Port
Look inside the charging port for debris, bent pins, or damage. If you notice debris, carefully clean it using a toothpick or a can of compressed air.

Check the Battery
If the laptop has a removable battery:

  • Remove the battery and try powering the laptop directly through the charger (without the battery).
  • If the laptop powers on without the battery, the issue might be with the battery, not the charging port or motherboard.

Test with Another Battery
If you can find a compatible battery, test whether the laptop charges with a different battery.

Inspect the DC Jack

  • The DC jack (charging port) might be loose or damaged. When the jack becomes loose from the motherboard, it won’t transfer power properly. To check:
    • Power off and unplug the laptop.
    • Lightly wiggle the charging pin in the port while observing if it feels loose or disconnected.

Inspect the Motherboard
If the DC jack looks fine but it still won’t charge, the issue might be with the power circuit on the motherboard, like a blown fuse or damaged power IC.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Okay so I already checked my battery, and there doesn't seem to be issues with it because when I plug the laptop in without it, it won't charge. I'm also pretty sure there isn't any problem with the DC port because the charger doesn't wiggle around in the port, and I don't think it's the charger either because I tried another charger and it didn't work either. There's for sure an issue with the motherboard, so I can't fix it myself. Thanks for the advice though!
