My laptop gave a message that my cmos battery required replacing-laptop won’t start.

i cannot find it on the motherboard and wondering if it hidden under a plastic panel somewhere or part of the main battery!

What is your machine ? Many notebooks now DO NOT have CMOS (or RTC) battery, machines use main batteries to keep their  clocks. Did you disconnect battery on your machine recently ?
