@Anthony_C
Before resorting to new motherboard, try the Nvidia Repair Service. Several members have sent theirs in to him and reported back very happy with results.

Mine just gave out last friday. It turns on for like 2 seconds and turns back off and so on in a never ending cycle. I called HP and they charge me $329 shipping included to get it fixed... Thats alot of money for a laptop that although a little over 3 yrs old was working perfectly fine just last thursday... Last year it was getting overheated or so I thought so I took it to best buy since it was still under warranty (til Jan 2011) and they told me to buy one of those laptop holders with fans and that it should fix the problem... Well I did and thought that was the end of it to come to find it out its not! I see alot of people are having this same issue, why doesnt HP just recall it? Its ridiculous that I now have to buy a new motheboard and find someone who will install it for cheap... I asked the CSR lady I spoke with on sunday about recalls for it and she said that my laptop was not included in any recalls they have going on now! When are they planning to do anything besides trying to steal my money to get it fixed?

Hello,
To be quite honest, HP is not willing to do anything with it. I just filed with the Better Business Bureau and the case was closed when HP wiggled out of it by saying the laptop wasn't on the recall list. Even though the same problems are occurring with these laptops that occurred in other models, HP is simply acting as if nothing is wrong.
They have, as far as I am concerned, the absolute worst customer service in the industry and have done nothing to prove me different. I have since switched to Lenovo and have been FAR happier than I ever was with HP. I highly recommend that you not even waste the money on getting the HP fixed. They have not, and they will not, ever stand behind their products.You can get a brand new laptop for around $400-450 now.
I also recommend that you file with the BBB. If enough complaints are raised, something might be done. Until enough people speak up, HP won't do anything that it doesn't have to.

i just had to send my wife compaq into them for repair , less than 6 months old and bad board on it , eventhough it is still covered under warranty it cost me $34.00 to ship it overnight to them , they had it for about 2 business days and i should be getting it back today. I wish they would have offered the same thing with my laptop but hearing the horro stories from hear on their board and what it would cost me to fix it , it would just be cheaper to send it out to soeone or replace the mother board myself.
I'm going to check the Better Business Bureau iher in Delaware and see if anyone has filed anythign against them about the same issue.

This thread is a little old but I thought I'd give some advice to anyone that was still reading. I have a dv6700 and have been experiencing the same problems for about a month now. Before that my cd/dvd drive burned out about 6 months ago and I couldn't use it. After reading through many of the posts here, I believe the issue is also with the mobo (mother board) but I have gotten a lil extra use out of my laptop by switching the boot sequence from dvd drive - hard disk to hard disk - dvd drive and was able to access the setup menus by just randomly hitting all of the f keys (f1-f12). After exiting the setup menus, for whatever reason it continues with starting up without any issues. After changing the boot sequence my laptop worked fine again for another 2 weeks but now the problem is coming back. I would suggest you do what I'm going to do and save all of your info to an external hard drive if you can get your laptop started up again because I doubt I'll have much more use out of it. Additionally if your wary of buying a name brand computer and your a little tech savy why not just build one? Thats what I'm going to try to do anyway.

randomly hitting all of the f keys (f1-f12)... while the laptop is trying to boot up. Meaning that as soon as you hit the power button start pressing all of the f keys repeatedly until you see the hp logo and the different setup menus at the bottom. After a minute or two it should take you into one of the setup menus, most likely the one you pressed the most. When you see the hp logo and don't want to mess with the boot sequence, just try hitting (esc) and it might continue to start up noramlly.
Thought I'd give a few more details, good luck!

Same problem here: daughter's laptop overheated and shut off by itself until eventually the screen turned black. I called hp last fall with no results, as everyone said (they're really a pathetic excuse for customer service) and checked on the nvidia settlement but our model dv6700 was not included. There was a battery recall also...ours was not included.
To find out after we've given up hope that there WAS a new class-action lawsuit that included my daughter's laptop but we were not informed of it...obviously, this wouldn't have been broadcast for everyone who could have had recourse, to actually get recourse:(

About a month ago my laptop HP pavillion dv6700 all of a sudden shut off. I thought it had just overheated. I took out the battery and let it set for 30 mins then put it back in and it started back up again. A few weeks ago the same thing happened. However this time it wouldnt start. The lights just flash on and off as I press the power button and it wont turn on. I dont have the type of money needed to rapair it or get a new computer so I am stuck using my 6 year old desktop. HP pavillion a1213w that I got at Walmart. Even though I reset it to the factory settings its still a hunk of junk. Teach me to buy an HP.
Any suggestions on a good brand. I had a Dell back in the day but no sooner did the warranty expire it crashed.GRR .
