Accidentally spilled some hot chocolate on my laptop and the whole keyboard was drenchedto the point that even the back and usb port had some hot chocolate in it. I immediately turned off the laptop and haven't opened it until now though I just don't know what to do as of currently since I can't get my laptop checked until friday due to school and I'm worried that the laptop would be more damaged if I let it sit for longer or just wait for it to dry since apparently the sugar in the hot chocolate can corrode the components of the laptop. Some other info is that there isn't any close hp centers where I'm from besides one affiliate shop near me. The model of the laptop is  15-dy2085nr

@HeyyieHeyo,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

I’m very sorry to hear about the accident with your laptop. You’re correct that the sugar and other substances in hot chocolate can cause corrosion and potentially damage your laptop if left unaddressed. Since immediate action is crucial, here’s what you can do until you can get it professionally inspected:

Steps to Minimize Damage:

  1. Keep the Laptop Turned Off:
Since you’ve already turned it off, that’s the right first step. Do not power it on under any circumstances until it has been thoroughly cleaned and inspected.

  2. Disconnect All External Devices and Power Sources:

    • Unplug the charger and any peripherals (USB drives, mice, etc.).
    • Remove the battery, if possible. Unfortunately, the HP 15-dy2085nr has an internal battery, so proceed to the next steps without attempting to access it unless you’re comfortable opening the laptop.
    • If you are comfortable opening up your laptop, here is a YouTube instructional video how to open up an HP 15-DY Series laptop: (2667) Laptop HP 15-DY Series Disassembly Take Apart Sell. Mobo, CPU & Other Parts Removal - YouTubeIf the laptop in this video is not identical to yours, please ignore!
  3. Drain and Dry the Laptop:

    • Turn the laptop upside down and gently shake it to allow any remaining liquid to drain out.
    • Wipe the surface with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove visible moisture.
  4. Prevent Further Corrosion:

    • Sugary liquids like hot chocolate are particularly harmful because they leave residue even after drying. This residue can cause corrosion and electrical short circuits.
    • If you’re comfortable opening the laptop, carefully remove the bottom panel and check for liquid residue. Clean it gently with 99% isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush or lint-free cloth. (Do this only if you're experienced or have access to proper tools.)
  5. Avoid Waiting Too Long:

    • Leaving the laptop with sugary residue for several days can increase the likelihood of permanent damage. If you cannot get it professionally inspected until Friday, drying it thoroughly in a cool, dry place with good ventilation is the best temporary measure.

Professional Inspection Needed:

Even if the laptop seems dry externally, internal components might still be affected. A professional technician should:

  • Open the device to clean and inspect the motherboard and other critical parts.
  • Assess if components like the keyboard, USB ports, or motherboard need replacement.

Next Steps for Repairs:

  • Check if the affiliate shop near you is certified to handle HP repairs.
  • Consider Shipping the Laptop to an Authorized Service Center:
If there isn’t a service center nearby, you might consider shipping your laptop to one of the larger cities (e.g., Manila) where HP service centers are located.

  • Local Repair Shops:
In case you can't wait for the official HP repair process, there are several reputable local repair shops in the Philippines that could assist with cleaning and troubleshooting. Make sure to choose a shop with a good track record of handling electronics, especially liquid damage.

  • If possible, contact HP Philippines Support directly for advice on warranty or repair options. Unfortunately, accidental damage typically isn’t covered under standard warranties, but HP may offer paid repair services.

Wishing you the best of luck with the repair process!

Kind Regards,
