HP Envy x360 14 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-fa0000 (9F4F2AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My laptop has an 8840hs Apu and it averages 20w under load which results in underwhelming performance which is quite similar to the iris xe 96 eu. Is there a way for me to increase the power to around 28 to 30w to increase performance?

Hi @tejusss,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to assist you.

The power limit of your HP Envy x360 14 with the AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS APU is typically configured by HP in the BIOS to balance performance and thermals, as well as to match the design of the cooling system. While it is possible to attempt to adjust the power limits, there are a few considerations:

Steps to Increase Performance:

1. Check BIOS Settings

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing Esc or F10 during boot).
  • Look for settings related to power, performance, or TDP. However, consumer-grade laptops like the Envy series often do not expose these options.

2. Use Ryzen Controller

  • Ryzen Controller is a third-party tool that allows fine-tuning of AMD APU settings, including TDP.
  • Steps:
    1. Download and install Ryzen Controller from its official website.
    2. Set the "Power Limit" (TDP) to 28-30W.
    3. Monitor temperatures and stability while testing performance.

Warning: Use Ryzen Controller cautiously, as increasing TDP beyond the cooling capacity of your laptop can lead to thermal throttling or hardware damage.

3. Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the BIOS and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Make sure you keep only the charger plugged in while updating the BIOS for your PC.

Click on the + sign next to BIOS and then download the file.

Open the file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

  • Please install all the pending updates for the Windows operating system by following the below steps.

go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the upgrade is available for your device and you want to proceed, download and install it.

  • Install the latest AMD chipset drivers and GPU drivers from AMD’s official website. These updates can optimize power management and performance.

4. Windows Power Plan

  • Set your laptop to use the "High Performance" or "Ultimate Performance" power plan:
    • Go to Control PanelPower Options → Select "High Performance" or "Ultimate Performance."

Important Notes:

  • Cooling System Limitations: HP designs the Envy series with thermal limits suitable for everyday use. Increasing the TDP may overwhelm the cooling system, leading to thermal throttling or even hardware damage.
  • Battery Impact: Higher TDP will drain the battery faster if you're running on battery power.
  • Warranty: Modifications that lead to overheating or hardware damage might void your warranty.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!

Hello Irwin,

I have updated and checked the bios for any settings like what u have said but there is none other than a setting to have the fan permanently on. The AMD drivers are all up to date. Ryzen controller gives me this error when I try to make any changes. The power plan has been changed to "High Performance" through this CMD prompt: powercfg /s SCHEME_MIN. Though I don't really notice a difference as it still uses around 20w max + or -1w. Ik its not thermal throttling as the temps stay under 80 degrees at all times. Mb if I could get Ryzen Controller to work, it would work?
