Probably had a mechanical drive and the drive was damaged.
You should run diagnostics to see if there are any other problems before spending a lot of money.
Tap the ESC key after powering on. Tap it once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash. When you see the startup menu, press F2 to run diagnostics.
After running diagnostics, go into the bios and press F9 or whatever function key is used to set defaults. Make sure the date and time are correct and then press F10 to save and boot.
If the disk fails it can easily be replaced as shown in the video
Any of these SDD that are 2.5 will work. Probably the 500gb will be closest to your old drive
You should install windows 10 instead of XP. If you do not want to buy 10 then you will have to put up with a reminder on the screen nagging you to buy it.

Tiny 10 may be better if you do not have much memory
There is an operating system called Tiny 10 that might work better than the full blown W10.
Works great. Uses the W10 product key in the BIOS to activate
