Pavilion 15 notebook
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

Having issues with boot up. gives error code 0xc000185.  Hard Disk test Failure id: 636DAW-6SS9R8-MFPWWK-61DB03.

I am wondering if there is anything I could do to fix this without loosing my saved data.

Product ID: F5Y81UA#ABA.

Hi:

 

The error code reported, Hard Disk 1 Full Test Failure, means the hard drive needs to be replaced and the operating system reinstalled.

 

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to recover any data, but after you remove the drive, you can purchase a SATA to USB cable, plug it into a working PC's USB port and see if you can read/copy data from the failed hard drive to the PC.

You may want to consider purchasing a better performing, normally more reliable 2.5" solid state drive (SSD).

 

You can reinstall W8.1 by downloading the W8.1 64 bit ISO file from the link below, and transferring it to a USB flash drive or DVD, using the Microsoft utility that I have zipped up and attached below.

After W8.1 has installed, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.
