don't know if my earlier message was posted but I fixed it, no need for a reply thanks!

Thank you, your instructions were very clear. Unfortunately, the "fix" didn't work for me. The entire top row of my keyboard (screen brightness, music controls, sound, etc.) used to work when pushed but now they only work if I also hit the function button. Have no idea why. I tried unistalling and reinstalling the driver but it did not fix it. Oh well, just one more button to push and I'll get used to it eventually. Just frustrated because this computer is only 6 months old and that's not the only problem I'm having!

Same problem here. when i go to the drivers i see 2 (i dont know much on computers so i hope i got them right)

I see an 1)intel R HD Graphics Family and a 2) standard vga Graphics Family, which it says it does not work properly (code 14) until i restart. I restarted ,updated, uninstall and it always has the same fault. When i click on it and choose scan for hardware changes immediately the brightess symbol appears on my screen and it works.

but only until i restart then it is stuck again. Also by doing this i missed all the minimize maximize and close buttons that appear on the top right on every page on internet or inside the computer. Any ideas?

After trying all the less invasive recommendations without success I finally opted for the factory reset. This did resolve my issue. Unfortunately, I have lost files and such despite having done a full back-up. Not a total loss of course. Still, frustrating though.

I'm having this problem with my dm1-4050.  I just got a replacement and its doing the same thing.

Uninstalling/reinstalling the video driver is not an acceptable solution since it doesn't permanently fix it.  If HP is listening, please provide some insight on this.  I will return this device if there is no actual solution.

I just realised it has something to do with the display adapters , when the laptop runs on the battery has a different  diplay adapter than when in electricity, the one in electricity in the one with the problem which is standard VGA graphics adapter. Anyone knows how to keep the same adapter with the one i have on battery?

My laptop Pavilion dm4 is nearly a year old; somehow I have put up with a darkened (anti glare?) charcoal effect to my screen.  But when I UNPLUG the Power COrd, the screen BRIGHTENS  AUTOMATICALLY and is GREAT to use.  How come I can't adjust laptop plugged in the same degree of  brightness?  BTW, I am not knowledgeable about what functions and keys are for.  I don't recall a user guide in my package and would appreciate being pointed to where I can get a printed user manual on laptop dm4  WIN7 functions.  ... Well here goes ... I will plug power cord back in and go back to reading by nearly candlelight.  Thanks for anyone listening out there ....

Well, more punching of F buttons figured it out:  F3 makes brighter; I was using F2 hoping for bringing text back for editing. I still would like a printed user guide for laptop Pavilion dm4. Thanks in advance.
