HP ENVY 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-ep1000 (322X6AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Earlier this year I  bought an HP Envy 15.6 laptop I7 11th Gen H with a 3060 GPU that comes with 2 thunderbolt 4 ports. It is a really good Laptop except that I have not been able to make my Oculus Rift S VR headset work on it. The Oculus Rift S works fine on my Lenovo legion 7 laptop via a Display Port to USB C adapter but that same configuration does not work on the HP Envy for some reason. On paper the HP Envy is more performant that my Lenovo Legion (I7 11th gen instead of 10th, RTX 3060 instead of GTX 2080) but still cannot make the VR headset work on it.

I use my VR Headset on the Lenovo legion to run MS Flight simulator and Condor 2 Glider simulator and would like to be able to do the same thing with the HP Envy. What VR headset would work on my Envy laptop? Any idea or suggestion? H anybody have experience with connecting a VR headset to this laptop?

Thanks

Hi, @alpac1 I will need more information about this.

  1. Did you recently upgrade to Windows 11?
  2. Did your laptop come pre-installed with Windows 11?
  3. If you recently upgraded to Windows 11, was the VR Headset working well on the previous operating system?
  4. The laptops you tested the VR Headsets on, are the running Windows 10 or Windows 11?

The laptop came with windows 11 already installed. My other Lenovo Laptop runsh Windows 10. I think I may know why the VR headset does not work when plugged to USB C of the HP Envy.  When I go to display settings and I look at the properties of the second connected display, the one plugged to the USB C, I can see that it uses the Intel UHD Graphic. That is probably why the VR Headset config software does not recognized that the headset is connected because it needs a high end graphic card.  When I plugged the external display on the HDMI i can see that the laptop uses the RTX adapter. Unfortunately the VR headset does not work on HDMI.

Actually, when I plugged an external display to the USB C of the Lenovo Legion I can see in the properties that it uses the RTX card adapter and that is probably why the VR headset works fine on the Lenovo and not on the HP.

So now my question is how can I force the laptop to use the RTX adapter when an external display is connected to the USB C and not HDMI?

Hey, @alpac1 don't force your laptop to do it, you may risk having an extra challenge on your hands. The issue is most likely coming from the Windows 11 operating system. Windows 11 is not fully optimized to run certain hardware because it is still in early development, so most websites and forums suggest we hold on before using the Windows 11 operating system.

Windows 10 works well with the VR Headset just fine which is why it works on the other laptops.

A good and great choice right now may be to use Windows 10 or your system. There is a good chance it will work.

Thank you for your reply but how can I move back to Windows 10 for a laptop that I bought with Windows 11?

HP Recommended

Hi, @alpac1 you can either use a Windows 10 installation CD/DVD or the Windows 10 media creation tool.

You can read more about it here.

Just wanted to report back on my issue. Downgrading to Windows 10 did not fix the problems. It looks like on this HP Laptop the NVIDIA RTX 3060 video card is hardwired to be used only via the HDMI port and not through the Thunderbolt. This is a pity because, although the laptop comes with a powerful video card, this limitation prevents using any high end VR headset like Oculus Rifts S or Oculus  Quest 2 since the HDMI port does not have the bandwidth to support a VR signal. Now I am resetting my laptop with Windows 11 because downgrading to 10 created all sort of issues with the Microsoft store.
