Computer is a HP Pavilion dv9000 Entertainment, running Windows Vista Home Premium.

No recovery disk exists.

I want to do a HP Recovery from the HP Recovery partition, but at startup the screen is just black. Pressing esc or F11 or F2 does nothing. After some time the Windows login shows, and logon to Windows is carried out.
But how to activate HP Recovery when esc/F11 and similar key presses does nothing ... and nothing shows on the black screen ... until Windows logon appears ... ?

Hi,

It sounds as if your Recovery Partition has corrupted in some way - the best option is to order a replacement set of Recovery Discs and use these to reinstall the operating system; they will also re-create the Recovery Partition on your HDD.

You can order a replacement set of Recovery Discs using the link below - I believe there is a small fee for this.

If you have any problem with this link, order them directly from HP Here.

Hey DP-K !

Thanks for your info about Recovery Disk !
I was already considering buying these, but on the 26th April, the BIOS startup text (white text on black screen) did not show up at all. The screen on the notebook was only showing or working normally, when Windows logon appeared. Windows was very unstable, but it was possibly to see the recovery drive E and the the Folder Recovery, and see properties of the E-drive, as well as C: and 😧 ... if Windows did not freeze up 😉

But at startup, I could not activate any disc in the DVD/CD-rom drive ... had been trying with a Windows boot DVD.

However, today I attached an external screen to the notebook, and when starting the notebook now, it is possibly to see the BIOS startup text :).
Pressing the ESC key brings up the choice of starting from the notebook drive (with the very unstable Windows) or from the DVD/CD-Rom drive. So now I know, that if we buy the recovery disc from HP (price = DKK 300 = $60), then we should be able to make recovery that way.

Now, according to the pamphlets belonging to the notebook ... at startup the notebook should displays text about pressing F11 in order to activate the recovery partition E on the notebook. But the notebook does not show any text about F11 ... and pressing F11 at startup is simply ignored by the notebook.

And according to the pamphlets ... pressing Fn+F4 should alternate the display between the notebook and the external screen and then both ... but again the notebook is deaf to this.

So I suppose that the BIOS software is "damaged" and should be re-installed/updated.

Therefore I will try out downloading the latest BIOS software for this notebook ... try install/update the BIOS ... and see if possibly the F11 key will activate the recovery partition.

Plan B will be buying the recovery disc ... 🙂

But again ... thanks for you input !!

Regards

Claus.

Hi Claus,

You could well be correct in thinking this problem may be corrected by re-flashing the bios - it would explain why the screen and optical drive are not detected correctly at boot.

Usually on HP notebooks, the Recovery partition is labelled D and HP_TOOLS is E.

Hey DP-K !

Re-flashing the BIOS did not bring back the possibly use of the F11 for at HP Recovery action. So right now, I presume that this F11 key feature originates from something HP induces to their computers in another way ... but which way ... ?

The actual PC is a Pavilion dv 9000 and belongs to a nephew of mine, who asked me to look at the problem. According to him, it has never shown the BIOS startup on the notebook.
It is only when Windows come to the Login, that something can be seen on the screen.
But strangely enough ... If I attach an external screen to the dv 9000 ... this screen does show the BIOS startup information ... however NOTHING about F11, and there is no response to pressing F11.
Pressing ESC at startup brings up the possibility of booting from the DVD/CD drive ... or from the notebooks C-drive ... but that is all 😞

So I have used an old Vista Business DVD with my license (from a computer now running Win-7 on a new license)  ... in order to install a working version of Windows. But my nephews license for the dv 9000 is for at Vista Home Premium, so we would like to install the correct version of Windows on the dv 9000.

When I look at drives on the dv 9000, I have the C-drive and the D-drive and finally the E-drive. The D-drive is a spare/backup drive with at few programs on, so I now use it for drivers and similar stuff from HPs page for this product.

The E-drive is called Recovery, and out of 4GB there is only about 700 MB free. Its folder/file structure looks very similar to the recovery drive (D-drive) on my wife's HP/Compaq computer (Win-7), and my own daughter's Pavilion dv4 .
So I suspect that the E-drive on the dv 9000 contains the HP Recovery files for the dv 9000. But without F11 working ... ?

Also ... the Pavilion dv4 originally had Vista Home Premium. Windows ran into problems, and so I bought a Win-7 for it, and installed this. It was done by formatting the C-drive, and then installing Win-7 without any tools from HP.

At startup this dv4 does shown BIOS startup ... and it does show that pressing F11 is an option.

Have you any idea how I would get the F11 key to actually work on the dv 9000 ... ?

Or do you know where I can LEGALLY download a Windows Vista Home Premium for free ... ?

Either way should solve the problem ... I hope 🙂

Hi Claus,

I think I see what the problem is.  It is normally the D partition that contains the Recovery files required to reinstall Vista - this is why pressing f11 is having no effect.  Somehow these partitions have got mixed up and once this happens it is nearly impossible to make the recovery partition work again ( ie renaming the E Partition, which looks like it contains the recovery files, to D will not work ).

The only real option to get the original version of Vista back on the notebook is to order a replacement set of Recovery Discs - these will not only reinstall the operating system, but will install all the original software and also correctly re-create the Recovery D Partition.  However I believe there is a small fee for ordering these.

You can use the link below to order a replacement set of discs.
