Just recently, upon start-up, I get a "Base System Device Driver" Not Found error message. Windows CANNOT locate the appropriate driver to fix the problem. I'm using a Presario F756NR notebook with Windows Vista (32 bit) OS.
I checked the "properties" for the device and find PCI bus 2, device 5, function 2 .
Under Status : This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.
Clicking Reinstall just causes another Windows search locating nothing.
I've tried downloading sp38689.exe with NO results.
Help Please!!!

Hi, Bob:
it is all part of that card reader controller stuff.
I suggest you right click on all the card reader devices and select uninstall.
If there is a checkbox to uninstall the driver, check those boxes too.
Restart the PC and if the drivers don't install correctly, download and reinstall the card reader driver.

Hi:
It is probably a card reader driver but I don't see the download file for it on your notebook's support and driver page, which is why you are having trouble too.
Not to worry...
Please go to the device manager and click on the base system device. Then click on the details tab. In the Properties drop down list, select the second item (Hardware ID's).
Post the top string of characters you see in the window. Those will ID the type and model of the device and I will send you the link to the drivers you need.

Hi, Bob:
This driver should fix you right up...
By the way, the driver was hidden in the keyboard section.
Normally it is listed as a storage driver.
No wonder I couldn't find it...

Paul,
I downloaded (AGAIN) the exe file and then double cliked it to execute. Program went all the way to completion and then asked me to restart. I did that and still got the same error message.
I had found that "fix" while surfing the web, BUT it doesn't work in this case.
So what now?
Thanks,
Bob

Hi, Bob:
Wow, no one has ever reported back that the driver failed to install.
Did you install the chipset driver for your notebook? I presume so, but if you didn't please do.
If you have then try to manually install the driver.
Click on the base system device. Then click on the driver tab. Click on update driver. Select the "Browse my computer for software" method and browse to C:\SWSetup\sp38689.
Make sure the Include subfolders box is checked and see if the driver installs that way.

If the manual installation doesn't work, try this driver from Dell:
The top download is the executable (auto) installation file.

Hi, Bob:
Install this...I am surprised you don't also have a "coprocessor" needing drivers in your device manager.
The chipset driver installs various motherboard drivers, and perhaps one of those controls your card reader.
It is possible that is a reason the card reader is not installing.
No one is ignorant on this forum. We are all learning as we go.
No one has all the answers. Certainly not me.

Paul,
Neither of those suggestions worked either.
But I did notice a second error (that's been there the whole time ).
On the Device Manager screen, I see that the SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller has a yellow flag also.
Location: PCI bus 2, device 5, function 0
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.
MAYBE this will help?
BOB
