I have recently purchased an HP 630 Notebook with a I3 370M 2.40GHz.  It has a intel HM55 chipset and according to ark.intel the HM55 chipset will support all the way up to the Intel® Core™ i7-940XM Processor Extreme Edition (8M Cache, 2.13 GHz). I was looking at upgrading the cpu as I upgrade Laptop CPUs as far as I can go my question is will the board supprt a quad cpu sometime the bios will not allow a quad unless it had been updated. I have updated to the latest bios found for this laptop. if I can not upgrade to the I7-940xm what is the highest cpu upgrade i can go to

Hi:

Below is the link to the quickspecs for your notebook.

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13963_div/13963_div.PDF

Supported processors are listed on page 3. Best you can go to is the i5-2540M

One can almost never install a quad core processor in a notebook that came with a dual core processor unless the motherboard is also replaced.

Hi:

Thanks for the info. That's good news for you.

I find it interesting that the specs I posted, show a processor that won't work in your notebook according to the list of processors you listed.

Is your laptop overheating with the 940xm?
I want to upgrade mine (HM65) to an i7-2630qm, which runs at 10W higher than the standard cpus supplied with the laptops.
The difference with yours is 20W. Did you make more changes to your laptop to be able to use the new processor? I'm assuming you replaces your charger.

i decided not to go with the xm I instead went with an intel I7-640M because it had a embedded gpu witch the XM doesnt but my laptop runs fine with the 640M I replaced the the heatpaste with artic silver 5 and my laptop runs cooler now than it did with the I3

Thanks. So you sticked kinda whitin the limits (tdp wise). Maybe I'll just buy the highest supported.
