Hello, I am not very computer savy and I would appreciate some help with the following:
I have just performed a fresh installation of XP Pro but cannot connect to the internet. In the device manager, there are a number of device types preceeded by a yellow "?" like this:
? Audio Device on High Definition Adio Bus
? Ethernet Controller
? PCI Simple Communications Controller
? Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
When I check the properties of "? Ethernet Controller" the device status says, "The drivers to this device are not installed (Code 28)." However, in the device's description, it says:
Device Type: Other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI bus 0, device 25, function 0
I figured I could download and install the driver for the ethernet controller but I don't know which one since the device manufacturer is unknown.
I'm not sure if this is the reason I can't connect but can someone help me out?
Thanks!

OK;
Here is the driver you need for that (Intel).
The one on HP's website doesn't always work for some reason.
So, I send this link to people needing the Intel driver and no one has yet to be disappointed.
You want to download and install the first driver listed (32 bit).

Hi:
First let's get all of those other drivers installed...
Chipset. Install first and reboot.
Then install the video driver and reboot.
Then audio: This is a two step process.
1. Install this first and reboot.
2. Install the audio driver
Then install the HECI driver:
Now, to determine what network controller came with your PC, please click on the Ethernet Controller in the device manager.
Then click on the details tab.
Post the top string of characters you see. Those will ID the model network controller you have and I can send you the link to the drivers you need.
Since you can't download and install the drivers I posted directly from your PC, just download them to another PC, copy them to a CD or USB storage drive and install them on your dc7700.

Great, thanks for your help!
I followed your directions and no more yellow question marks! (except for the Ethernet Controller)
The Ethernet Controller's details tab in the device manager gives the following:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_104A&SUBSYS_2800103C&REV_02\3&B1BFB68&0&C8

You're very welcome.
Enjoy!
If you want to get a set of factory HP recovery disks for your PC, just call HP at this number, 1-800-334-5144.
Inform the customer services rep that you need a set of quick restore disks for your dc7700. You will need to provide the model number and serial number.
Cost for a set is $10.

Hi, chuk:
You would also need the same driver I posted for the same hardware ID the other person posted above:
