I have also bought a 4530s (LW843EA) and today my laptop gave me a BSOD stating there is a problem with the atikmpag.sys. I have Win 7 Ultimate 64bit installed and everything worked perfectly. I tried updating from the ATI website but the drivers don't work. The new drivers were released yesterday, but are nowhere to be found on the HP support/drivers website. The old drivers give me the BSOD, why is that happening? If they worked until today, why shouldn't they continue working, regardless of the new drivers being released? Doesn't make any sense.
And this Switchable Graphics "feature" **bleep** is that? I don't need two graphics adapters, can i just disable it in BIOS and use only the ATi 6490M?

Hi:
Please see if these HP documents regarding switchable graphics are of any help.

Hello. I had the same problem but I resolved it. No change BIOS settings.
Open Catalyst Control Center -> preferences standard view -> Energy -> Swichable Graphics Methods -> you have to choose MANUAL.
Then restart and update the drivers

Update the drivers? From where? The drivers from the ATi site will not work, only HP drivers will work. I have tried it anyway and it really doesn't work.
I have cleaned the drivers and installed them again, and it worked until this morning, when it gave me the atikmpag.sys BSOD again.
This is very frustrating. I have a lot of work to do, and can't make my laptop work.

So what is the solution.....?
i have 3 laptops. all of them hp probook 4530s with switchable graphics.
i spent all day trying to fix them.
so what did you do? did you send it back to the store?
its intresting beacuse it does install ati catalyst if you try it severel time (at first install i've seen Blue screen of death). in device manager i can see both of them and stiil cannot switch.

I uninstalled the ATi drivers and installed only the Intel HD drivers. This process took several tries, disabling the ATi card in the Device Manager, sweeping and cleaning the ATi drivers with an app called "Driver Sweeper" (http://phyxion.net/item/driver-sweeper.html) and installing only the intel drivers, going in and out of Safe Mode...etc. I honestly don't know how i managed to do it, but now at least i got my laptop working with no more Blue Screens and me pulling my hair out.
In my Device Manager, the ATi card now sits marked with a yellow exclamation mark and named "Standard VGA graphics adapter". I am not feeling adventurous and i am not touching it as i don't want to open the Pandora's Box and unleash another week of frustration and madness on myself.
I see there are new official HP drivers out, dated 15. Nov. 2011, but like i said, i am not feeling adventurous.
I am really dissapointed, next time i am buying a laptop it definitelly will not be an HP.

I have now tried to install the new ATi drivers and the laptop went ballistic again, with the same old BSOD stating atikmpag.sys caused the problem.
Neverending story.

It works!
I updated the BIOS to the currently latest version F.20 (11 Oct 2011) this morning. I used HPQFlash Utility to update the BIOS directly in a Microsoft Windows Operating System environment. After that i reinstalled the graphics drivers and it works. I have manually set the graphics to High-performance GPU (meaning 6490M) and it works fine.
For now.
I will take this with a grain of salt.
Or an ounce.
I hope this lasts a while.
