I accidently bashed my hp compaq presario cq 61 earlier. Didn't knock it too hard but immediately after I had done so and turned my laptop on I was presented with a black screen that had the message:
Hard drive not exist
what should I do? I am lost without my laptop, completely lost.

Hi,
I would try removing and then reseating your Hard Drive to see if this helps.
Although the machine in the following link is different from yours, the process of removing the Hard Drive is near enough identical.
When you have reseated the drive, see if the notebook will now boot.

Had actually thought that this could be the case and went out to get myself a lovely new screwdriver case for the job in hand.
Came back and checked this forum. I have taken out the harddrive, given everything a bit of a blow and wipe and popped it back in. For now it seems to be working ok, succesfully booted into windows and seems to be running well. Now it is time to make a back up and change the bios to boot from cd so, if this happens again I can at least boot into ubuntu.
Thanks a lot for your useful video and suggestion. Kudos to you.

I have screwed up worse than ever! I installed ubuntu and removed windows without really thinking about what I was doing. I really want windows back but my machine didn't come with a disk windows was pre-installed.
Any suggestions you think might help this idiot out???

Hi,
It's possible you still have the Recovery Partition on your Hard Drive so try tapping away at f11 as you start the notebook to see if this will launch. If it does, you can use this to reinstall your Windows operating system.
If the above doesn't work, you can use the link below to order a replacement set of Recovery DVDs and use these to reinstall - there is a small fee for this.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
DP-K

Hi,
Tap away at f2 as you start the notebook to enter the Diagnostic Menu. Run all the test available on the Hard Drive and post back with details of the results.
Please also post back with the full Model No. or Part No. of your notebook and the operating system you are using.
