Hp pavillion (not sure which)
Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)

When I turn my laptop on a message comes up stating there is a problem with the system cooling fan etc, (system fan 90b)

I have followed some instructions online which include blowing into the air vents to try and remove any dust build up, the next time I turned my laptop on the message disappeared... however it has reappeared which means the problem is still there.

I went on the hp techcenter website and it said to do a hard reset as the next step -- I am concerned that this will delete all of my documents, music, photos etc. will it?

Also, will a hard reset even fix the cooling fan or is it something that needs to be taken to a shop to fix properly, I don't want to mess with it too much and have it breaking even more on me!

Would appreciate any advice or suggestions , thank you!

Hi LCh1,

Please try the following ,

A Hard reset pretty much is a power drain  & doesnt affect your files .

Just disconnect battery & adapter & then Press & hold the power button for a 30 seconds & then tun it on only with the power cord .

thats the right way to do a Hard reset .

Also update BIOS to be a little extra sure .

After everything if you have the same problem Contact HP Support through phone or chat if with active warranty .

Or purchase the Chassis fan & have it replaced yourself or contact a local ASP

Hope it helps

Hi

My suggestion would be to take the unit to nearest HP tech center or call HP support.

It seems to be a hardware issue

Adding to that, i also suggest to update the latest BIOS and check for the Fan error.
