Same identical problem here. I have been trouble shooting for days see later posts as I did get my sound back eventually but not sure if problem is fixed altogether. I am keeping you guys posted on my discoveries.

SOUND IS BACK!!!! Well only as of today. I'll have to up date again later on how I have progressed with this issue. So now to the solution that worked for me. I did a total system recovery to the original factory settings ( backing up everything first as you will loose all your files). I did not do any automatic updates and have set them to manual so that I can
one- only do them in small batches as suggested by a tech support person
two- monitor any changes/problems as I go to narrow down the culprit
After I was told that large installation of windows updates could cause problems in my computer I remembered that a few months back this happened as my windows update was not working for a long time and when I received tech support to fix there was a lot of updates that were done. Not sure of this was the issue/ will keep you updated as I said. It has also been noted by a previous person who re-installed windows w/o the service packs fixed their problem. Again though I'll let you know once I install my service packs and see if problem reoccurs.

I wonder if anyone from HP reads this blog.  I am letting as many people I can know that HP products have turned to crap and everyone should buy elsewhere.  For me it was a new Dell Laptop, a new 20inch Monitor and and e-machine desktop.  Next to go will be the printers.  That's what you get HP for being so responsive to your customers.

YUP, after doing a group of updates I lost my sound again. It even describes the issue on Windows Vista service packs but none of there suggestions worked. Not sure what I'm supposed to do about not getting any up dates for my computer??? Will have to get support on later I guess.

SO GOOD NEWS A FULL SYSTEM RECOVERY BACK TO MANUFACTURER SETTINGS RESOLVES THE SOUND ISSUE ALTHOUGH i THINK THIS WAS JUST A LAZY SOLUTION BY THE HP TECH. BUT NOW I HAVE A NEW ISSUE WITH WINDOWS.

Hopefully someone super technical "ahem" HP can give us a little more advice on the compatibility problem.
I'll keep you guys updated if I find out anything more. 🙂

I've looked over the updates there were installed and it didn't upgrade my windows service pack. I have service pack one and everything worked fine there. I'm not sure which update is causing the problem and why. I REALLY WISH SOMEONE AT HP WOULD HELP ME WITH THIS!!!! here is some of the updates there were done by windows update. a bunch of security updates for windows. Update to net frame work 3.5 and some security updates for this. Security update for internet explorer. A binch of regular windows updates.security update for windows media. windows malicious software removal tool. and etc.....

Good luck finding help from HP.  I too thought it might be an issue with updates and spent hours on the phone with Microsoft letting them try to fix.  It would work one day and not the next.  I bought a usb sound card for $3 and external speaker and all was fine for a few months.  Then the cd stopped working.  System would not recognize it.  Several months later the computer just stopped booting up

Well, I decided to finish installing my updates and installed the service pack 2 for windows as all these things were previously installed when my sound was working so it couldn't be this causing the problem. I did notice some "recommended" updates and noticed quite a few that were to deal with compatibility issuses and downloaded those. I was surprised that they were not listed as Important but anyhow that's done. I did retrieve my sound back this time by going to my Recovery manager in the programs list and selecting that I would like to perform a DRIVER recovery. It's the second suggestion after program recovery. I also got my hp health check working again as it had stopped working when my problem started initially and got everything up to date. This new information was now listed in my HP help and support link. Someone should try this and let me know if it works for them. I have copied and pasted this from help and support on my computer.

Sometimes error messages such as:

  • 'No Audio Device is Installed' and

  • 'Audio service is not running'

occur when opening the volume control by double-clicking the volume icon from the system tray. To resolve the error, follow the steps below.

  1. Click to open the Services window. enter Services in search from the start menu

  2. Grant permission to continue, if prompted.

  3. Scroll down to and select Windows Audio, right-click to open the pop-up menu, and then click Start.

  4. Right-click Windows Audio, click Properties, and then verify that Startup Type is set to Automatic.

The Windows Audio service is now running. The error message should close.

Yup, spoke to soon. Problem is back. Hp posts this in help and support menu installed on my computer.

"Several hardware or software issues may cause sound and audio problems. With the jump from Windows XP to Windows Vista many of the ways in which sound is controlled within the system have changed. For troubleshooting tips for sound and audio issues see below."

They don't mention to any of us the exact ways the jump from XP to Vista has changed how the sound is controlled. Thousands of us are having this exact problem and try everything HP suggests to us but it never fully solves or address the problem. 😞 I guess this means this will be the last time I purchase from HP. Very dissappointed.
