My fingerprint reader stopped working. I can open the Simple Pass ID program but when I click on fingerprints, it indicates "verifying identity" with an hourglass on top of the fingerprint icon and no matter how long I wait, that's all that happens. Any advice appreciated.

Hi Mikey,
Looks like you are running the Digital Persona flavor of SimplePass.
Two things to consider / try, in Order.
If the Reset works, you don't have to reinstall the driver...
- Hard Reset
- Reinstall the Driver
Hard Reset:
Sometimes all you need to do is kick the computer. This method works for a variety of connection and ‘stuck’ program issues.
- Disconnect all external devices first.
- Remove AC power and the battery
- Press and hold power button for at least 30 seconds
- Reinstall only AC power for first startup ** See Note
- Power on - Log in
- Next time you shut down the system, reinstall battery.
** Note: You can ignore the bit about leaving the battery out. If you like, reinstall battery the first time and be done with it.
=====================================================================================
The Driver, from your website:
Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver sp52354 V2.1.0.2
- Install the Validity Sensor Driver installation package: It will be named sp*.exe – the package will most likely be located in the Downloads folder. If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package and “double-click” to install it, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.
I hope this helps!

"Good to know I'll be there when I get there." Smiling.
Glad it's fixed. Digital Persona is extra "hardy". Just kick it once in a while and it works. Awesome code.
Hope the Reset works on the "other bits". Let us know, if not.
Good Fortune!

Hi Loner,
The general rule is as follows:
- Drivers control the hardware - Drivers interact with devices connected to the computer: keyboards, fingerprinters, speakers, mousepads (TouchPads), USB devices... "things". Drivers are special hardware programs.
- Software controls Programs - Software is a particular set of instructions, that is, a program - and it interacts with the computer (hardware) and the User (you).
- Drivers always install first.
- Software installs Secoond.
- When a hardware device stops working, and assuming the hardware has not failed, it is usually a failure of communicatioin between the Driver (hardware program) and the hardware it is supposed to be controlling - in this case the fingerprinter.
- If the Hard Reset fails to set things to rights, then you can try resinstalling the Driver that controlls the fingerprinter. Drivers can become "corrupted" from normal use, from a sudden mixup in the instruction set during a shutdown or bootup of the computer, or from a variety of other filesystem issues. Sometimes, you just have to reinstall the driver.
One way to reinstall the fingerprint driver is to let the system reinstall the driver from within the Device Manager. Assuming you do not actually delete the current driver, the system will use a backup of that driver from your Driver Store and reinstall it for you.
Try this:
==========================================================================
Before you do the next step,
make sure you have a copy of your fingerprinter Driver in case you end up have to install the Driver from scratch:
Go to the top of this Forum page - to Support and Drivers
- Enter your notebook model number
- Open the HP web page for your Product / Model
- Go to the Software and Drivers Downloads page
- Enter your Operating System
- Scroll down - Go to category Driver – Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices
- Select “Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver” (Newest Version)
- Save this installation package onto your computer. Make a note of the file's NAME and its location.
If you like,
- If applicable, Go to category Software - Security section and click to open it.
- Select the SimplePass package
- Save this installation package onto your computer. Make a note of the file's NAME and its location.
=========================================================================
Next, Do this:
Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager > Biometric Devices >
RIGHT-CLICK Validity Sensor > Uninstall > OK
- Reboot completely > Log in and let the system reinstall your fingerprinter driver.
Check...
If all else fails, you can try deleting your onboard driver from the Device Manager (Check the "delete" box when you do the "Uninstall"), rebooting, and then using your downloaded driver to install a new copy of the driver. You should not have to get to this point.
If things are really messed up, you MAY have to once again reinstall your SimplePass 2011 software...
Remember - order of events. If you do get to the point where you are ripping everything out and starting over from scratch: Drivers install first, then the Software.
I have lots of posts on this subject - you can do a search for more information.
Of you need more help, please start a new Post and explain what you have done to try and fix the issue to date. Thanks!
Good Luck!

Loner,
You are welcome.
Keep those notes handy. Smiling.
Dragon Tips:
Export your TrueSuite, HP SimplePass or AuthenTec Webcard Database!
When you have working SimplePass software, Export your Webcards.
In the event that you must remove and reinstall the SimplePass software, your webcard backup can be used (imported) to restore your website login information.
Start SimplePass > Settings > Export NOTE: File will be named *.tsd

Cheers!
