Hi there,
I have a Presario V6000 laptop (running Vista) which cannot connect to my home wireless network. I have successfully used wireless at uni before, but when I tried to connect to my new wireless network at home tonight I couldn't find any wireless network (I have other devices connected to the same wireless router so it shouldn't be the connection's problem.)
Further info:
- Internet works fine with ethernet cable
- Wireless light appears faulty (changes everytime the computer starts up)
- Under Control Panel > Network Connections there is only 2 listed (Broadband Connection and Local Area Connection)
- According to HP Wireless Assistant, I have disabled Wireless LAN Adapter in Device Manager
- Under Device Manager > Network adapters there is only 1 listed (NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller)
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks (:
EDIT:
- My wireless module is "Atheros, Model: AR5BXB63" (found under the memory module compartment cover)
- I have tried looking for an Atheros wireless driver update myself, but was confused: my computer says Presario V6000 on the front and Presario V6700 Notebook PC on the base sticker, but when I went to the Australian HP support and driver site, it didn't offer my computer model. (I purchased the computer in Australia)
- As I COULD find the Presario V6700 Atheros wireless driver on the US HP driver site, I attempted to install it however it downloaded successfully but it hasn't seemed to install properly.

I then went to the support portal and downloaded first the current driver, but to no effect. I then downloaded the second one, and restarted my computer, but still no change.
(I installed these 2 by downloading them, and doubling clicking them and accepting the terms and agreements etc.)
I have been checking Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapters. It currently still only lists "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller". Is this the correct place to look for it? That is the correct place
I really appreciate your help!
You are at the point where I would disconnect and reconnect the module to see if it makes a difference. If doing that didn't make a difference then I would pronounce the wireless module to be non functional and replace it.
Are you comfortable enough with your tech skills to access the module and disconnect and then reconnect it?
I will look in the manual to see if it is easily accessible.. The HP Pavilion dv6500, dv6600, and dv6700 Entertainment PCs Maintenance and Service Guide has a great description and it is simple to access the module. All you need is a jeweller's philips screwdriver. Look in the Component replacement procedures section--->WLAN module for a description and images..
I will look back at earlier posts to see if you mentioned whether or not your notebook was still in warranty. If in warranty, the module would be covered.
In which country do you reside? I ask that because the manual lists the wireless modules by world regions. I am in the Netherlands.
A viable alternative would be to purchase and use an ExpressCard\54 wireless adapter. The Service guide shows the slot to be present in your notebook on the left hand side. That would probably be less expensive than purchasing and replacling the OEM WLAN module.
Best regards,
erico

Hi,
HP provided the original driver in two locations:
Disk #2 of the recovery disk set you should have made by now. Or
Iinstall the driver by use of the Recovery manager in Windows. Start -->All Programs>HP>HP Backup and Recovery Manager -->In the Recovery Manager, click Advanced Options , and then click Hardware driver re-installation .. select your wireless device and install the driver.
The Recovery Manager can also be accessed during startup of your notebook.
Take a look at the barcoded sticker on the bottom of your notebook and post everything you see there except the serial number in a reply to this message.
Best regards,
erico

Thank you for your reply!
Following your instructions, I have re-installed the Wireless driver, however unfortunately nothing has changed.
On the underside of my notebook it says:
Product: Presario V6700
Serial: -----
p/n: KM813PA#ABG
V6704AU
Warranty: 1 year
HP service tag
There is another barcaoded sticker with the "Product Key" on it - do I need to list those details?
Thank you again!

Go to Control Panel to see if the wireless adapter is recognized by the OS ans shows a driver loaded. Right clilck the device, select properties and look at the drop down. Does it say disabled? If it does, use the drop down to enable the device.
I do see the Atheros driver at your notebook's support portal in the drivers & software downloads area under Vista. There are two versions of the driver available. Try them both, starting with the current one.
Which method of installing the driver did you use?
Best regards,
erico

Hi there,
sorry about the belated reply!
I am unfortunately not confident enough to disconnect/reconnect my module! Nor is my notebook under warranty (I think I purchased it 4 years ago).
I considered purchasing a wireless adapter, however my dad just opted for the most simple of options - getting a new laptop! Ahahaha (:
Nonetheless, thank you so much for all your help, I really appreciated it!
Sincerely, mabellina (:
PS I reside in Australia! Thank you again, my netherlandian friend!
