When powering on, laptop screen shows HP logo in the center and "Press the ESC key for Startup Menu" and will not go many further in boot process. Pressing the ESC will not access the Startup Menu but I can get there by pressing ALT-CTR-DEL then pressing the ESC key. I ran diagnostics and the memory test and HDD test show no errors.
I have removed the battery, unplugged the power adapter and press the power button for a minute and no change. There are no lights flashing on the laptop.
Pressing F11 for HP Recovery gives me a blank screen with a cursor in the upper left corner that is not flashing.
Any ideas? This thing is less than a month old...

Sounds like the file system is corrupted. If F11 is not working, you may have to get the recovery media from HP support.
BTW, if there are important data on the hard drive, may be seek professional "data recovery" help.

Thanks for the reply. I will contact HP for the needed disks.
I am worried though that this laptop is only 3 weeks old and its having corruption issues. I shut it down normally and then started it up after a couple days and its corrupt.
Should I expect more of these in the future? Wouldn't a there have to be a hardware issue to cause the software to corrupt? It doesn't just happen by itself(?).
Thanks again.

I ended up sending the laptop back to hewlett packard. When I got it back the hard drive was wiped clean. It had a basic OS install on it. Neither the security software nor the quick web launch software was installed. I'm pretty sure I had to actually reinstall a bunch of the drivers to get bluetooth and the network to work as well. Its been awhile now and the laptop seems to be better.
Good luck.
