Hello everyone.

We ordered a couple of elitebook 8460p which were sold to us with video that can be expanded to 1.5gigs.  the video card is an intel hd 3000 graphics accelerator.  I looked at the Spec and Warranty from hp http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/321957-321957-64295-3740645-3955549-5056942.html?dnr=1

and it shows something about 'discrete' amd radeon hd 6470m.  what is that about discrete?

Graphics Integrated: Intel® HD Graphics 3000 Discrete: AMD Radeon HD 6470M with 1 GB dedicated DDR3 video memory

Is it possible to change how much shared mermory is alocated to the onboard video card?

thanks

Hi:

The service manual for your PC shows no info on the BIOS setup menus, which is the only place you would be able to change video memory.

Normally you cannot change the onboard memory allocation, but without the BIOS setup menu, you may have to wait until someone that actually owns a 8460p can answer your question.

Basically your model has switchable graphics. Onboard Intel and discrete Radeon.

More info on how switchable graphics works can be found at the links below.

HP Switchable Graphics document links.

Hi Paul thanks for replying,

I checked the bios to see if there was any video setting but I could not, I also tried the intel hd graphics application that you can run from windows....no luck.  Maybe a bios update is available?  I will see if there's an update.

So what you're saying that I can switch from the onboard 64mb to another 'onboard' amd video card that can go to at least that 1.5 gig or 'shared' video?

I will look at your links.

thanks again.

You're welcome.

I don't have any first hand knowledge of switchable graphics since my most current notebook is the Elitebook 6930p.

But yes, in theory you are supposed to be able to switch from the onboard graphics to the discrete graphics when you need more video horsepower.

I have read many posts from folks that can't get the stupid graphics to switch though on various model notebooks.

Sorry, I can't be of more help.

Do a search on the notebook forum -- type switchable graphics in the seach box, and you will be deluged with postings regarding switchable graphics questions. Perhaps you will find some useful info that way.

well I guess we bought 8460p that does not have 'discreet' video card.

I downloaded AMD Video Driver and Control Panel from the driver site and it doesnt enable any extra features on the laptop. driver here

We reviewed the original quote and noticed the HD3000 as the video config on the laptop, we asked one with the AMD and it's about 30 bucks more.

So I dont know why we found this discreet option but yet the one we have does not have this switchable option.

What a mess.

Sorry things are messed up regarding the order.

The good news is you don't have to worry about how switchable graphics work.

You will not be able to do anything with the video memory with the Intel onboard graphics. It is automatically determined by the BIOS and OS.

Unless your staff are doing CAD or other graphics-intensive operations, the onboard graphics will work just fine and the batteries will last longer between charges.

CAD is exactly what they do.

we're getting them replaced.  what I hate is the vendor how knows we're in the cad business and we tell him we need at least 1 gig of video and we get this low end junk.

the problem I have with hp is the many flavors for the same freaking model.  give them complete different model numbers or add other letters other than just a "p".  >:[

Well then, good luck with the replacements.

You will definitely need the discrete video.

I'm sure everything will work out.

Don't be too quick to dismiss the HD3000 - 64MB might be the default minumum allocation, but it can allocate upto 1.7GB if needed. All done automatically as demand on the GPU varies.
