Product Name: HP Pavilion dm4 Notebook PC

Product Number: WQ874UA#ABA

A faint horizontal line appeared out of nowhere across my laptop screen. What could be the cause? And how can I fix it?

You only have a few days left of warrantee so contact HP ASAP and make a claim. The store may not deal with HP warrantee claims so call HP right now. After the phone call I would do a follow up visit to the store.

It's a mother board problem, the fact that the symptoms show up on the external monitor clearly points this out. If it was just the laptop screen, you would have a good picture on the external monitor. The video card on the mother board is causing the problem on the external monitor as well.

Anyway it doesn't matter what my diagnosis is, CONTACT HP RIGHT NOW AND MAKE A WARRANTEE CLAIM !

Connect up an external monitor to see if the line appears there.

Also, shut down and upon boot up start tapping the f10 key immediately to get into the BIOS _ do you see the line on the BIOS page ?

 Let me know your findings.

Yes the line showed in both cases. So I don't know what it could be?

Two things you can try, but I don't have much faith that they will do anything. Do a hard reset, remove the battery and power adapter, hold down the power button for 30 seconds and boot up with only the adapter plugged in. The next time you completely shut down and boot up, you may insert the battery.

Remove one stick of RAM and start up, if the problem persists, then try only the other stick. Make sure you are statically discharged before handling your RAM.

Anyways, because the symptoms appear on both screens, you are having a problem with your mother board or specifically your video card. Has the laptop been running hot lately or do you game allot.

You may also contact this guy for a possible repair, let him know your trouble shooting steps and symptoms.

I also had a look at your model and it's quite new, is the warrantee up yet ?

Those steps did not fix the problem. I think there could be something wrong with the screen.

Yeah, i bought this laptop last year and the Expiration date for the warranty is on 9/22/11. So do you recommend that I should take it to the store?

Thank you for the help by the way.

Thank you a lot. I did call them and hopefully they are able to fix it.
