Try shutting the system down leaving it off for 5 secs. Power it back on and begin tapping the F10 key. If the bios comes up try running a memory test:

Perform memory test
To perform a memory self test, follow these steps:
  1. Plug the AC adapter into the computer.
  2. Turn off the computer and wait 5 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the f10 key to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.
  4. Use the Left Arrow and Right Arrow keys to navigate through the menu selection to locate the Diagnostics .
  5. Use the Down Arrow and Up Arrow keys to select Memory Test .
  6. Press Enter , and then Yes to perform memory test.
  7. After test completes, press f10 to Save and Exit , and then press Enter to Exit Saving Changes? .

If the notebook is powering on but the screen remains black that could mean the back light is out.

Try to shine a flashlight onto the screen and see if you can see the images on the screen.

Also you can try to connect an external monitor if you have one. If this monitor has no image then it could possibly be your graphics card.

We have about 120 of the 6715b laptops and are getting many of them with this issue. They are no longer under warranty as they were purchased in 2008. We did have a few with the black screen problem whilst under warranty which were sent back to the HP partner that supplied them to us for repair. The repair they carried out was to replace the processor.

We are unable to get to the bios, nothing is displayed on the screen. The hdd light comes on for about a second when you switch on but then that goes off and all you can here is the fan.

We have been buying processors and replacing them, but they are getting more difficult to get hold of and I have never heard of so many processors packing up. Also sometimes we find we can swap the processor to another machine and it works. We have also updated also upadted the bios to the latest version which has made no difference.

Has anyone else had this issue and got  a resolution or have any other ideas. Any advise would be much appreciated as at the moment we have 14 unusable laptops sat in our office.

Thanks

Hollo,

I have the same problem with one of my HP 6715b, don't know what is doing it, or what to do with it. Sometimes notebook start normally, but almost no. But when is running, sometimes is shuting down without any reason, I think that temperature is OK.

Only double orange blink HDD LED, fan start, one long green blink hdd. After that fan stop and LED with flash icon blink orange and after that notebook is shutting down.

I have a second HP 6715s (same as 6715b without fingerprint and card reader) and he has this problem: http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-HP-ProBook-EliteBook/Compaq-6715b-Black-screen-issue-Is-there-...

On the next weekend I will try to change CPUs (I have four CPU and three NB, so I will write some info about my conclusion). But I think, that is not CPU problem, but motherboard :(.

EDIT: So when I opened notebook and unmount cooler with heatpipe I found CPU which has thermal grease on small microchips... when I clean it and try start NB it works normally for more than 20-times of start, my problem was really on CPU how it look.

hi

i had this problem,,screen black after laptop used for sometime and getting hot..remove hatch in centre bottom laptop, ,,held by one screw,,loosen screw underneath this ,,looks like not holding anything,,but one of three holds keyboard in place, loosen other two ,,little rectangle like keyboard next to screw (2),

i removed keyboard,,three screws and 4 tabs,,u can access the memory chip,,remove this and carefully clean contacts,,also remove 4 screws to heatsink above amd chipset, carefully bend this up away from chip and place heatsink compound about size small pea on top of amd chip.u can buy from ebay cheap.

then refit heatsink (ITS THE LONG COPPER ITEM). to chipset. 4 screws .

also whilst bottom hatch off clean the memory chip contacts here .

refit keyboard and hatch.

i drilled small holes around the hatch plate because the memory beneath runs very hot,,but u may not want to do this,,,the reason for holes is to allow more airflow here,

my 6715b runs ok now with no probs...i think this laptop runs way too hot causing slow responce and screen probs etc..my new 6715b lasted two years then would not start.

i traced to burnt solder contact on power board,,couldent fix so purchased good 6715b from ebay.

i like these as they are solid and well screwed together,,all be it with overheating probs,,needs more slots on bottom casing i  rekon??.... also whilst the keyboard is off replace bios battery ,,like a keyfob battery,, just flicks out from holder ,again ebay or motor / elec store for this,,again cheap..

good luck.
