Okay so I was listening with headphones on my laptop today, got up to answer my door and the cord caught my foot, laptop fell onto the chair I was sitting in. Came back later and.now it says after pressing esc during startup that no hard disk is detected. I took the steps as instructed on a youtube video I found and removed and replaced the hard drive and no luck, what is my next step without digging deep into my pockets ? Any help would be good. I just can't afford to take it here and there and replace parts that don't need replacing doin the trial and error method. Thanks!

Are you able to access the BIOS?

Go into the BIOS and run the hard disk diagnostic test.

If the BIOS does not see the hard disk as installed, then the floor drop may have rendered the hard disk inoperative.

If that is the case, then it is time to find your HP recovery disk set or USB recovery media that you should have created.

Once you have the recovery media in hand and have installed a new hard disk, run the Recovery manager from the DVD drive or boot from USB as appropriate to the type of trecovery media that you have. I recommend using the factory image recovery.

If you did not create the recovery media then you will need to purchase recovery media from HP or an HP Partner.

OK. Re read my previous post as I have edited it. You will need to purchase a 9.5-mm SATA, 2.5" notebook hard disk to replace the failed one. They are not that expensive any more.

In your fist post you said that you removed and replaced the hard disk. Did you mean the original hard disk?

It's brand new. Western digital I believe. It had a 160gb before I got a 640gb now. Blue screen comes up saying to run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart the computer. How rock run CHKDSK /F ?

What is wrong is that the new drive does not have a bootable operating system installed on it yet.

Have you tried booting from the recovery disk set to recover your notebook to its delivered confdition?

You might have to go into the boot menu and set the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive if it doesn't "see" the first recovery disk and boot from it on its own.

Once you have the Recovery manager started it should prep the hard disk for you and install the operating system after you begin the factory image recovery.

You should have continued your original thread as it was not yet resolved. I will move it for you.

Done!  This thread is now merged with the original one.

You should take a read of the System Recovery topic at the web support portal for your notebook.
