macOS 10.13 High Sierra

953xl cartridge was depleted so i replaced it with a new genuine HP953xl & got an error message saying "older style cartridge & wont work in my printer but might in older ones" I have had this cartridge a while as I dont do a lot of printing but this cartridge was bought from HP directly & brand new so why wont it work.

So since i purchased these very expensive cartridge from HP (over £120) they released an update for my printer that prevents me from using these very expensive cartridges even though they are genuine!

So my next question is are HP prepared to replace this cartridge & the other 3 colours that came in the same box with ones that will work?

I have had the same problem. It would appear HP have updated the firmware to try and stop counterfeit cartridges and inadvertently rendered any old stock of genuine HP cartridges useless. I have tried various workarounds suggested online but to no avail. I have tried to contact HP direct but as my printer is out of warranty I am directed to chatbots which send me round in circles. I have now now been unable to print for 2 days lost several hours trying to resolve the issue and am having to write off £40 worth of cartridges. They seem to be refusing to acknowledge the issue instead advising people via a bulletin to buy ne cartridges. Any loyalty I may have had is now gone.

Jay, I'm also getting the Older Generation cartridge message. I am using genuine HP carts. Please PM me with solution or contacts for solution.

For a possible workaround, try this website.  I was able to use my older genuine HP ink cartridges after following the process on the website. Use at your own risk, and I would run virus/malware scans on anything downloaded.
