HP Officejet 4500 g510n-z All in One
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to use HP Smart to scan Documents.  I would like to do this wirelessly.  When I tried to use HP Smart indicates that my 5ghz network will not work with my printer because print only works at 2.4 ghz.  I already setup the printer on my network for printing and it works fine.  I also tried to use HP solutions but it is looking for adobe flash which has been eliminated from adobe.  I had to use usb to scan documents but in the future I would like to scan wirelessly.  My printer is a HP officejet 4500 g510n-z All-In-One series.  I am also running Windows 10 Home Version H2 on a lenovo Flex 5 64 bit operating system.

The Full Feature Software / full driver printer software is still available for this printer.

It is an older version (and the only one available) - it might still work with Windows 10.

As far as I can determine, this is "Full Feature Software" and NOT the "Solutions" software (which indeed depended on Flash).

The printer only connects to 2.4GHz.

This printer is right on the edge of the age at which the printer might not support HP Smart.

This means, HP Smart might not be able to connect or it might do so.  Coin toss.

Don't try HP Smart again until after you manage to install the Full Feature Software (and get it working).

HP Smart may not work even then, but it might have a better chance of doing so.

Connect and load software...

If your printer is on your network and you are satisfied that it is working,

you can ignore this next part...

If the network is both 2.4GHz and 5GHz,

If you have the option to do so,

Connect the printer to the named SSID network name for the 2.4GHz band.

If your router "sees" the printer connected to the network,

The router can connect both printer and computer to the network.

Next...

Load the Printer Software...

See if you can get the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software to install.

Install the printer software on any computer you want to use for printing / scanning.

Assuming you can get the software to install,

Use HP Scan (part of the Full Feature Software) to scan your documents / image files.

The Full Feature Software supports printing from other programs, for example, Word and Adobe Reader DC

Printer Software Check

Notes

If the full driver printer software is installed, you will see the printer listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.

The installation of the printer software adds two shortcut icons to the Desktop.

The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools

HP Scan is named for itself and provides a direct call to the HP Scan software.

If the printer software is already installed and not working,

Uninstall the printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

Install the Full Feature Software for the printer

Download and Save the printer installation package for the “Full driver

Next

  • Navigate to the folder in which you saved the software installation package (likely Downloads)
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • Reminder:  If using USB > Connect the USB cable when instructed (toward the end of the installation)
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

The Full Feature Software provides the foundation for printing using other software and programs on your computer.

HP Scan can be called "stand alone" to scan your documents and photos / images.

Examples

NOTE:  Due to the differences between printer model and software versions, your menus might look different from the examples shown here.  Options are also printer model and printer software dependent.  That means your printer might not be able to "do everything" you see in any examples.

Example - HP Scan - Main Menu

HP Scan - Save as JPEG

The Full Feature Software provides access to the Printing Preferences.

Called from within other software / programs, Preferences might be called Printer Properties, Properties, More Settings, or similar.

==============================================================================

Will any of this work?

Honestly, I don't have any idea.

Might work.

What if it works / sort of works / you want more Scan options...

What else?

There are additional Scan options available in Windows 10 - some of these do require that the Full Feature Software / full driver is (already) installed.

NOTE:  Webscan might not work - your printer might - OR might not support EWS...

Webscan – located in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) – No additional software

NOTE:  Webscan feature  is not available on Laser printers

If the printer is on the network,

If the EWS feature is available on your printer,

First Time Use Only:  Enable Webscan

  • Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
  • Tab Settings > Security > Administrator Settings > Enable >> Check box next to Webscan
  • Click Apply to save any changes

Use Webscan

  • Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
  • Tab Scan > Webscan
  • Set up Webscan the way you want it - for example, set the Source to ADF
  • Click Start Scan to scan your document / image using Webscan
  • After the scan is complete, Save the scan to your computer.

What else?

If the Full driver is installed AND working,

HP Scan Extended

  • HPSE is a subset an older Full Feature Software suite.
  • HPSE features are very similar to the HP Scan Software released after 2015.
  • Although HPSE appears to be a separate software, HPSE is dependent on the infrastructure provided by the Full Feature Software (full driver).  The Full Feature Software for your printer should be installed before installing and using HPSE.
    • OPTIONAL:  Add HP Scan Extended shortcut to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start
      • Open File Explorer > Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Scan Extended\bin
