Exactly how do I find the settings for USB port power saving on my Windows 7 computer?
Go to Start, Control Panel, View by Large Icons, Power Options and for whichever power plan is active click on "Change plan settings", then "Change advanced power settings". In the Advanced settings page scroll down to USB settings, click the + and then set the appropriate settings to "Disabled", Apply.

Thanks for the great directions, and I had no trouble installin g the patch. However, my Toshiba laptop (purchased June 2010) does not seem to have the necessary Windows 7 driver to operate my HP Deskjet 820 Cse, a very solid printer with extra toner that I expected I could use with my Staples Parallel to USB cable. The computer does correctly recognize the software, but Windows 7 and Windows Update apparently cannot find the driver even though I see many people have this printer working with such a cable. Could I also be allowed the driver update, please?

The printer driver should be installed before the patch is applied. See here for information on installing the driver. This will require you have a live connection to the internet and have Windows Update set to Automatic as described in that page.
If for some reason the automatic installation fails you can force the download as follows: go to Start, Devices and Printers, Add Printer, (pick the appropriate port, possibly USB001: depending on your converter), Next and then click on Windows Update. It will take some time for the list of printers to refresh, after it does you should have the HP Deskjet 820 under the HP manufacturer (not Hewlett-Packard).

Hi,
1 year ago, after I boght a W7 64bit PC, I was so happy to redux my old HP 710 C, but since one or two months the printer is printing only half pages, or just nothing, or days later some pieces of something... I guess, some windows updates have done it... I changed the usb-power settings, too, but without better results. Any help for the good old thing?
best regards,
Arturos

I installed the patch. But the 712c is still not on the list of HP printers to use. Now that I've clicked "update", even the 710 and 720 are not on the list. Is there a way to get my Deskjet 712c to show up on the list of printers to add?

I installed the patch. But the problem is not a crashed print spooler.
The problem is that the 712c is not on windows 7's list of printers to install.
I need to get it there, and windows update didn't help.
If that dll for the 712c is the driver, maybe I need a .inf to go with it?

Hi,
That patch doesn't work for me.
Once windows update got through with my computer, it wouldn't recognize
HP deskjet 710 either. (it never would recongize the 712c, not on the list)
I have the dll from your patch. Is there a .inf file I can put in with that so it'll
show the 712c on the list of available printers?
Microsoft's website claims a download is required from HP,
and HP's site claims the driver is included with windows 7.
Windows 7 shows a list of supported printers, and no, the 712 is not on the list.
This is 64-bit Windows 7 home premium, on which "xp mode" cannot be used.
(The same goes for another printer, the $500 HP deskjet 1220c)
help! help! help!
