Mine is stuck in update loop as well.  And I can't get HP to take a call.  Their automated system hangs up on me as soon as I'm identified as an Apple user.  I can't believe HP put this out on the market and that Apple sells it.

Can anyone tell me how to return this?

Thanks.

Well, I finally got mine to work.  I sorta did what McgLnx suggested.  Outside of the LCD screen are four buttons (if you look hard or get to the correct angle and light, you can see them, because they only light-up under certain conditions).

I did BL-TL-BR-TL multiple times, and suddenly the screen went black.  It reset on its own, and I was back in business.  I never had to use the secret menu reset.

I'm not 100% sure what really happened, but I kept trying BL-TL-BR-TL several times, and like I said, the screen went black and reset.  So give this a try.

I also took his advice and went to Best Buy beforehand and practiced.  If you do BL-TL-BR-TL, it will get you to a secret menu.  Hit the right arrow twice, which gets you to the Reset menu. Hit OK, then the right arrow again, and you get to the Partial Reset.  Hit OK, and it will shutdown the printer.  Restart the printer, and then go through the setup process.

Good luck.

Thanks HP for nothing.

Two other notes:

First, once it resets, the default resets to automatically accept updates.  So turn that off!!!

Second, I bought my printer around Thanksgiving from Best Buy.  As it was considered a holiday purchase, their return policy is extended beyond 30 days to Jan 31.  So if you bought from Best Buy during the holidays, you have until Jan 31 to return it if so desired.

I got the same problem with the printer stuck on updating.  I resolved the issue by holding the power button down for no less than 1 minute then while depressing the power button pull out the power cord.  Wait another minute, then plug the power cord in and power the printer on.

SOLVED!!! I don't know how you can recreate the situation, but I was in the same loop with my Envy. I tried everything above to no avail.

Then God stepped in and took care of it. We had terrbile storms roll through and had 3 quick brown outs in a row. Like magic, when my Envy came back online, no more update message and everything is working fine.

Good luck!

i have exactly the same problem, started in late january.  Waited for a week, kept forgetting to look into it.  Finally called HP, they seemed like this was an unthinkable problem.  First, was told this sounded  like an "engineering issue" that needed to be elevated.  Found out "engineering" didn't want it, so tech walked me through an "unplug" and restart.  No mention of any possible fixes using buttons.  He finally said they would send me a new one.  I paid for 2 day shipping, but then a day later they called and left message that printer would not be sent out for several weeks.  Waiting.

Can still print, just annoyed.

I didn't know the home/cancel/back buttons were there, but they are.  I had to hold a flashlight to them to see them.  They are there.  Also, I could power down if I held the power button for approx 10 seconds.  I cannot get the reset menu codes to work.  Will try a few more times, kinda just waiting.

I cannot believe HP isn't working this issue.  No official statement on support website, nor in phone tech support.  WOW

Same here.  Worked great for 1 week until the update.    Now stuck in a loop despite off/on cycles and tapping the "hidden" buttons.

Hello HP: does anybody care enough to stop the updates---apparently not.   I am sending mine back to Amazon: they are as customer friendly as HP is NOT.

I have written a letter to the HP CEO---got the usual bureaucratic reply.   In short, they just do not care.

Further follow and my last call to HP.

They called here I explained the endless loop problem  Told them many have experienced it with the update.   That I had a full refund from Amazon, but perhaps they could warn customers about the update.

They apologized and propose to do NADA.

Unbelievable!!!

Another casualty to add to the list :Crying: I've tried the magic BL-TL-BR-TL trick without success, have left it alone for 48 hrs hoping it would sort itself out, tried every combination of powering down and unplugging, no luck whatsoever.

The printer and scanner do appear to be fully functional, however, the display is stuck on the update screen. Online support don't recognise the model and have no technical knowledge of this printer.

I'm hoping a fix will be quick in coming, perhaps an update we can administer from the PC via wifi/usb or perhaps a reset file delivered via the memory card slot?. Real shame there is no way to reset the machine, it would only take a few minutes to set it up again.

Any response from HP yet?

I'd called HP support about the "door stays open after printing" issue.  I was passed to a special group responsible for support of the envy printer.

While discussing the printer, I mentioned that the firmware update process seemed fragile, and that the last update seemed to stick in the "don't power down" screen for hours.  The support engineer I was talking with indicated that this was a known problem, and that they were working on a fix due in a few weeks. They seemed aware that this issue had caused problems for users.

During the discussion about my door symptom, the tech support engineer advised me that if they did have to send me a replacement printer to fix the door issue, their advice was not to install updates until the next update is out with that firmware update fix included.

This makes little sense to me though.... surely if the current updates are unstable, they'd just pull them until the fixed update is ready?  Then again, they also suggested I check back on the website in a few weeks to see if there was a firmware patch available for download.  How this would be any less risky than the printer's own download of the update isn't clear to me.  Perhaps there's another way to push a firmware update to the printer that's more direct (SD card slot?) and less likely to run into issues?... I'm skeptical at this point, but I'll try to keep an open mind.
