Hi Jim, hoping you can help. Have an 8500 pro wireless. We are wanting to use the scan to email function through the wireless, but cannot connect. I have read this and several threads and basd on this I'm thinking it is a networking issue.

My op system is still XP. I am connected by dsl using a westell combination modem / router. It is hardwired for now via ethernet cable, but in the past was connected by a Dlink dwl g510. When I hooked up the printer, I configured it to the dlink card, and other then the scan to email function not working have no major issues.

I just spent the better part of two hours with a woman in india that got me no where except to tell me that what I want is not possible. So should I have connected to my printer via the westel modem and then tried to configure the scan to email or is the connection via the Dlink ok?

Further information is that I'm using windows live mail and have to configure the scan to email function by using a default email address.

IP address - 169.254.49.192

Subnet mask - 255.255.0.0

No default gateway or primary dns addresses listed in the net config page.

Feel free to request any other information you need and I will be as prompt as possible.

Thxs for any help, Mark.

Hi Jim, Solved the problem with a little help from a friend at a computer store a couple of towns over from me, but not before one of your customer service techs in India wasted 2 hours of my time. Thanks Mark.

Print out the network configuration (press the icon that looks like a wrench, select Network, then View Network Settings, then Print Network Configuration Page).  In the IPv4 section, tell me what it says for the following:

  • IP Address
  • Default Gateway
  • Primary DNS Server.

If either of these items are blank or set to 0.0.0.0, then scan to email won't work and we'll need to manually set these items.

It looks like the Officejet Pro 8500 is on your network.  At this point, you'll have to make sure the email settings for Virgin Broadband are correct.

I found this link that describes setting up email for another email client.  While the steps are different, the information needed should be the same.

Here's a summary for Virgin Broadband:

E-mail address:(your Virgin Media Mail address, including @ntlworld.com, @blueyonder.co.uk, @virgin.net or @virginmedia.com)
User Name:(your Virgin Media Mail address, including @ntlworld.com, @blueyonder.co.uk, @virgin.net or @virginmedia.com)
Password:(your Virgin Media Mail password)

Incoming mail server (POP3):pop3.ntlworld.com, pop3.blueyonder.co.uk, pop.virgin.net or pop3.virginmedia.com depending on your email address
Outgoing mail server (SMTP):smtp.ntlworld.com, smtp.blueyonder.co.uk, smtp.virgin.net or smtp.virginmedia.com depending on your email address

Outgoing Server Tab

My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication:enabled
Use same settings as my incoming mail server:enabled

Advanced tab

Incoming server (POP3):995
This server requires a secure connection (SSL):enabled
Outgoing server (SMTP):465 or 25
This server requires a secure connection (SSL):enabled

greetings,

all details you mentioned are correct except:

My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication: if i enable i cannot send any email

Incoming server (POP3): 110 and not 995, if i use 995 email will not work.

Outgoing server (SMTP): 25

This server requires a secure connection (SSL): if enabled email will not work

This server requires a secure connection (SSL): if enabled email will not work

i checked with virgin broadband and i was told my email settings are correct and the fault from printer settings.

i can send emails and receive emails without any problem from my computer using microsoft outlook 2007.

Just checking - have you tried this?

1) Open the Officejet Pro 8500's internal web page by browsing to its IP address.

2) Select Scan to E-mail Setup from the web page.

3) Select Add Outgoing Email Profile

4) In the form, enter all the data from your ISP.
