This is typical of HP support. HP needs to fix this problem once and for all. Recently I had to tell an HP Tech how I fixed my own printer problem after this no knowledge tech could only say download and reinstall the software. If I can convenience my wife to give up on HP I promise to NEVER purchase another HP product. I have the same problem and no matter what you do it keeps coming back!!!!!

After days of frustration trying to have HP identify and solve my problem, thankfully i googled and found this site.topic.
after two emails and on my fourth call to HP tech support today and constant run arounds, i was told by the HP tech officer that he had never heard of "HP Cue Device Discovery Service", that he could not assist me and that as my PRINTER (F4280) was out of warranty he could not help anyway ... yes, wonderful HP customer care and after sales service in action ..!!!
Background: on 7 December, i was requested, by an HP message of the need to re-install the driver for my printer .. after some 3-4 attempts and multiple annoying, irrelevant pop-ups the Driver installed successfully ... and that is when the nonsense started ... since 7 December, i have had some 35 incidents of computer "hang". all have the message "Service HP Cue Device Discovery Service hang on starting". (often 2-3 "hang" events per day !!!). the only way to get around this is to switch the laptop off .. wait a while and then turn it back on, both actions via the laptop power switch. when the computer is "on", the Printer works (but never got to test the scanner) - so it would appear NOT to be an issue with the Printer.
i will now attempt the fixes suggested above in this issue topic .. many thanks to the contributers ...
having found this site and given my experiences with HP HELP over recent days, i can only express my absolute disgust with HP, their product and lack of support ... the ultimate must be that an HP Technician claimed today to have never heard of "HP Cue Device Discovery Service" ... what rubbish ...!!! Google found me this HP site, the issue and the revelation that it is a COMMON fault. Additionally, i note other Goggle references to the problem/issue which i am yet to check out ....
Thank you HP for absolutely nothing but fustration with a problem that you have created ... i may well take the advice of another contributor in this thread and simply dump my HP Printer along with any other HP product i find in the house and resolve NEVER to purchase another HP Product while spreading widely my grossly inadequte experience with the HP Product and toal absence of any support whatsoever ... simply PATHETIC, to say the least .... !!!

HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service prevents detection of the Huawei USB 3G modem (E156G). Disabling the service allows Vista Enterprise SP2 to correctly identify the modem, and add it to the device list. A day of frustration to sort this out after the home broadband service was disabled by gale force winds.

Dear DexterM,
I encountered, for quite several times during the past few days, the problem of "HP CUE Device Discovery Service". I followed your instruction and disabled this service and began to download sth. in order to see whether the same problem will re-occur. UNFORTUNATELY, YES!--Service hung on starting! An hourglace figure appeared and never disappeared until I forced the shut-down of my PC and re-started it a little later.
I even removed completely F4280 from my PC and tried to see whether the same thing will happen--again, YES! The HP- Device-Discovery-Service related virus once more "shot dead" my PC. Bravo!!!
Could you pls. offer me, any way, your ultimate solution?
Thanks quite a lot.
Vincent

Windows XP; C6280 Printer :
1. First Stop the HP Cue service in Windows Services then Disable the service.
2. unregister hpqddsvc DLL
a. search for it (hpqddsvc.dll) F3 and open folder containing ... or manually find it.
b. open a command prompt window.
c. regsvr32 -u "C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqddsvc.dll"
c1. include quotes around "drive:\path\dll"
3. Upon re-booting the HP Cue Service is gone from Services and {2C82180E-8C3C-4A1B-BEB1-B9140713E701}
is gone -- but not forgotten -- from the Windows XP Registry.
4. regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqddsvc.dll" should bring it back, but unless other HP devices need this service ...
Lastly, the Windows DCOM Error is only alerting you that something is wrong, which we already know.

X-Referencing Solutions is not done or not done very well:

This probable final solution, until HP does something else to break my solution. It should work for the majority of people. For users that can't get past the install, my solution may be of no use. What was HP thinking when they put this useless piece of crap (HP Cue Device Discovery Service) on us? + more and more bloated software to go with more and more ranting about it ... makes me not want to PRINT anything anymore.

I have used a Scanjet G4050 scanner and C6180 printer for years. I replaced the printer with an Officejet L7590. I now have nothing. Scanning is impossible. My computer is so slow as to be almost worhtless. I can't count the times I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software. The HP Scan diagnostic utility freezes up. I now am considering throwing both units away and buying from a diffeferent manufacturer.
