This is old but my problem is the same.  I came to the conclusion that you could print with just yellow and black because that is what it said on HP website!!  I am trying to print for work and can't now so I'm screwed and pissed off. Will not buy hp products ever again. Going back to Lexmark where I never had issues or lied to.

Can you provide a link to anywhere on the HP website it says the Officejet Pro 8600 can print with just yellow and black?

 

HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.  For inkjet printers:

 

    • Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Officejet 8040a is an example.
    • Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet Pro 8600 printer.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
    • Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printhead or burned out printhead firing resistors. The Officejet 6700 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.  

The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.

 

If you never print in color a laser printer would likely be a better choice.  If you occasionally print color but mostly black an IPH printer like those in the first category above may be a good choice.

It is a 160$ printer...we should be the ones to make the choice to risk damage to it by running it out of color while printing black only......

It is not clear what post you are refering to.  What did not work?  If you are out of one or more colors and have an Officejet Pro 8600 series printer you will need to replace them as described in the post here.

I have a meeting early in the morning and have wasted HOURS trying figure out how to print something in Black & White while cursed with an empty Yellow cartridge.  This is asinine!!!  

 

Then there's the wild goose chase of clicking on the series of tabs, buttons and apps in the hope of some guidance or help...all for naught!  No information, no support, downlowds that don't work...pathetic.  Nothing from HP except time suckage.

 

I'll never get this time/sleep back, and HP will never get my business back.  This is the worst customer service/experience I've had with a company/product.

It's been 3 years since the issue was first reported and this has not been updated through a software patch release. Shame on you HP. You have approximately 18 pages of 'complaints' relating to this issue at the time of this posting. Is this really the impression you want to give the customer? It is far cheaper to retain a customer by keeping them happy then by having to acquire a new one. Perhaps if this mentality existed throughout your workforce, your stock price would have year of year growth instead of 2011 lows.

 

Moreover, it's no secret that there is a significant margin made in ink, perhaps this is the reason for your neglect. [Content Removed]

i escalated this issue to HP CEO.. I got a call from someone by name Susan ( Executive escalation team). She was not help to say the least. This printer is designed NOT to print Black without color ink. She gave some crap explanation which did not make sense. HP is awful company. They want to rip you off by selling ink cartridges

 

I'm not buying anything from HP.
