I spent approx. 2 hours on the phone trying to resolve an issue with my printer that is less than 5 months old. A printer that I have had a lot of problems with. After spending over an hour on the phone with them and doing all these tests/resets, etc, they claim that I have run a refill printer cartridge in the printer and say that the warranty is voided. WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING?

Firstly, I have never, ever bought a refill for this printer. Secondly, I have told them that I have only bought factory sealed HP printer cartridges...they didn't believe me. Thirdly, if I had (and I have not), why would that void the warranty?

I am here to warn people that HP is scam...they are getting out of warranties under the excuse that a refill screws up the machine... what a joke.

Even if there was a refill used, it is still an HP cartridge. So, they are ripping people off. They are voiding warranties over such a lame excuse because their products suck. I have had problems with this printer since day one.

The other problem is this. I bought the printer in Oct. 2010... and was very surprised that they said I only had 75 days left on my warranty. What? I should have between 6-7 months left on a one year warranty.

BUYER BEWARE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a known illegal practice of many printer manufacturers. If you are in the US, read here.

If you are in EU, read here.

Article 4

Product design

Member States shall, without prejudice to the requirements of Union legislation on the proper functioning of the internal market and on product design, including Directive 2009/125/EC, encourage cooperation between producers and recyclers and measures to promote the design and production of EEE, notably in view of facilitating re-use, dismantling and recovery of WEEE, its components and materials.
In this context, Member States shall take appropriate measures so that the ecodesign requirements facilitating re-use and treatment of WEEE established in the framework of Directive 2009/125/EC are applied and producers do not prevent, through specific design features or manufacturing processes, WEEE from being re-used, unless such specific design features or manufacturing processes present overriding advantages, for example, with regard to the protection of the environment and/or safety requirements."

At Annex VII it says what this directive is for...

- toner cartridges, liquid and paste, as well as colour toner

Now get to HP and demand them to respect the law.

FYI

The links below have details on HP's warranty policy with respect to refills.....

FYI also, all local HP representatives follow the same procedure in almost all countries when it comes to dead HP cartridges.  It seems though that they act as if instructed to do so. If you call them on support of new HP cartridges that have failed, they answer that the problem lies on refilling, even though the cartridges are 2-3 days old, brand new and never refilled. Local HP headquarters claim the cartridges do not fail themselves, they fail only if something is done to them. Well, I still have those HP cartridges, they are intact. And even though I had my printer sent to HP so they could run tests on it, they never came up with an answer...but they also never spoke about refilling again, it was obvious cartridges were not refilled . And although they know the problem is on their side, they keep hiding it. "You refilled the cartridges" is the #1 answer on HP support when you call them for help.
The fact that HP cartridges fail prematurely is a very well known fact. "Remove and check cartridge" and similar messages indicate cartridge failure.
New cartridges failing on me were the reason I quit HP many years ago. If you notice the forums, it keeps happening. I was purchasing cartridges that I could not fully use, on 2 incidents they died 2-5 days later after minimal use. Refilling was out of the question, a dead cartridge does not work when refilled.
